Defective Chords is an instrumental duo comprised of Michael Hafftka and Adrian Morgan. They each play a wide variety of musical instruments from valve trombone, guitar, electric bass, and drums to tuned racks, violin, and wheels of their own creation. Both are highly adept at programming music software and utilizing new technologies, but prefer recording sounds in a real live environment to using direct sounding virtual computer instruments. The group composed, performed and produced their first full-length record “Deployment” in early 2003.

Adrian Morgan Born in Idaho, Adrian Morgan began his musical career playing slide trombone at the age of 11. In 1993, he received a full scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston Massachusetts. There, he began playing bass trumpet and valve trombone in addition to his principal instrument and later earned a BA degree in Music Production and Engineering. In 1997, he moved to New York City where he quickly established himself as the principal vinyl-mastering engineer at the world’s top audio mastering studio, Sterling Sound. In that position, he was recognized as one of the world’s youngest engineers to master the art of analog disc cutting. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed head of the audio department at Metropolis DVD where he worked on groundbreaking DVD-Video titles such as the Criterion Beastie Boys Video Anthology. In 2001 he founded his own company, Blumlien Sound / DVD, specializing in original music composition, advanced DVD authoring, and 5.1 surround sound.

Guitarist Michael Hafftka is better known as a world-renowned visual artist. His work is represented in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum Of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Carnegie Museum, and other museums in the US and abroad.
Michael’s harmonic approach to the guitar is staple to the group’s sound and provides a very unique foundation for composition and improvisation. He is also highly influential in designing the group’s unique percussion instruments which are key in making the group’s music definitively unique.
