Well-presented readings emphasizing lyric beauty, some rare works.

Dave DeLucia's "Show Some Emotion" cd is a worthy addition to any
collection.This
is no amateur hour, but a serious effort in much rarely heard repetoire,
emphasizing
very effective lyricism. An attractive program, a cd you will turn to often when
you
need some solace, or time with your significant other.
Dave brings wonderful tone, wide dynamic range and pallete, transparent playing
clearly deliniating structures and polyphonies, focused, communicative, tasteful.
Ravel's Pavane Defunte is a disciplined, classical reading which restores
dignity to a
piece Ravel surely intended as an Classic dance, not a Debussian cloud. A
multi-faceted gem in Dave's hands.
Dave also brings the too little heard "Oriental" from the Granados Dances, the
gem of
that set, a sensitive reading that can stand with deLarrocha .
The Villa-Lobos "Lenda do Caboclo", and the Santora " Paulistana #1" were not
known to me,but have now whetted my appetite, lush reading of the Villa-Lobos, a
haunting, beautifully played Santora, very appealing music .
I discovered I had no Debussy "Suite Bergamasque",complete now on this cd. The
Prelude ,especially at the end, is a real technical challenge Dave handles well;
the
Menuet is just stunningly played, a breath-taker; Passepied,
whimsical.Bravo,Dave!!
The Casadesus Prelude #24 and "Deux Pieces" of Tialleferre also not known to me,
but examples of how much good music goes unheard. Tialleferre the only female of
Les Six, and Casadesus the eminent pianist Robert. The Tialleferre 2:04 Valse
Lente is strikingly beautiful, recalls Debussy's Plus Que Lente waltz.
Rick Robertson's intense 3 minute Romance is a highlight. One is reminded of the
Rachmaninoff Op.16,# 5; perhaps also touches of Faure Nocturnes; yet a
fresh,"American" sound to my ears, simple, honest, uncloying emotion. As a
2-piece
encore set, this Romance and the Tialleferre Valse would have the audience on
its
feet, in tears.
The cd
ends ,as it began, with great Ravel playing, here the complete Sonatine,
long
a favorite of mine, Menuet again the highlight for me.The Anime is the most
virtuosic
moment of the cd,and Dave brings it off effectively, much conversation between
the
hands. Would like to hear Dave in some other Ravel.
To be clear to all skeptics
here, this
is an unsolicited review, as are all my efforts here.Usually, all I require to
review is a
late night, cheap cabernet, and good playing; here, the playing sufficed.
