Album Notes

"Alien Terrain" is a 1970s-style lo fi science fiction film in the musical style of early Howard Shore (“Scanners,” “The Brood”), the retro space sounds of “Phase IV,” “THX 1138,” and “Zardoz,” with a bit of Pino Donaggio’s “Blow Out.”

This release was created by a Chicago-based production team including composer Demetri Fox, director J.D. Cosling, producer Darren Callahan (of TEENAGE BLACKOUT and TRAVEL), with screenwriter Andy Sumpter, based on the book by Bernard Richter, with graphic design by Regan Davis, photography by Jim Luning, second unit by Jen Poulin, effects by Fraser Coffeen, and starring Andrea Lucius, Ellen Girvin Mike Dunbar, Dan Caffery, Lisa Callahan, Charlotte Anne, and Liam Joseph.

This is the second release by independent label Phantom Soundtracks, a U.S.-based record company specializing in film soundtracks for fake films. Production teams are assembled to concoct a film idea, a brief outline, sample dialog, title and logline. Actors and/or models are cast in key roles. Lobby stills are storyboarded and shot by a professional photographer, reenacting scenes from the unmade movie. Then, a composer retreats to create cues based on the sketchy details of the story and the mood of the photographs. At last, the record is released to the world

Recorded, mixed and mastered in Chicago, IL USA by Darren Callahan with Blaise Barton, this recording features guitar, bass, piano, synthesizers, and flute. Recorded digitally, the songs were digitally downgraded and then mastered through analog drivers to match as closely as possible scores of the 1960s and 70s.

Additional Catalog:

“Spikes” by Darren Callahan (May 2010)

“The White Airplane” Eric Leonardson / Heath Hays (April 2009)
