CAROL DENNEY: Bio

Carol Denney has worked more than 25 years as a humorist, musician and social activist: voted "Best of the Bay 2001" by the San Francisco Bay Guardian, and "Best Solo Performer" in the 2002 East Bay Express' readers' poll, "BestFfemale Artis"t on Pirate Cat Radio 2010 .

Her CDs "The Rich Will Never Be Poor" and "The Cruel Lullaby" feature innovative guitar and English concertina with support from session players Nina Gerber, Radim Zenkl, John Wetzel, and Brian Theriault.

Denney's street theater reached infamy as the author of the comic cardboard saws (inscribed "I Came, I Saw...") which inspired the UC Regents $250,000 civil suit against her. The regents argued that her stage props and songs were responsible for People's Park's unrest in 1991. The Regents declared her a public figure in 1992 so that she could not sue them for defamation.

Denney was part of Free Radio Berkeley's original clandestine crew, spending two years as "Laura Drawbridge" co-hosting "Thinking Globally, Revolting Locally" with Stephen Dunifer. Denney also wrote, produced and performed with the Jolly Roger Comedy Troupe, micropower radio's premiere comedy team. She was a featured actor in both George Coates'1999 and 2002 production, the "Mock City Council" playing the City Attorney, and is also the creator and editor of the satirical newspaper, The Pepper Spray Times.

Denney is regularly featured in the Bay Area at the Freight and Salvage, Strings, San Francisco's LaborFest events, Napa, San Francisco, and Berkeley Folk Festivals and of course, picket lines and demonstrations.

Denney has five recordings available; "North County Jail", "Failure to Disperse", "What If Love", and the CDs, "The Rich Will Never Be Poor" and "The Cruel Lullaby".

The Rich Will Never Be Poor
author: Carol Denney

I was so moved while listening to "The Rich Will Never Be Poor." The beauty of Carol Denney's singing alone brought so much pleasure to me - the many subtle and strong ways that she uses it to express herself bring enormous pleasure. There is a song cycle in there written after her mother's death that left me drenched in tears and then in joy. It is such an elemental piece of music - the journey through life, the pure love she felt for her mother, and the joy at the heart of living. It's the experience of being leveled and, through being leveled, finding that joy again. Troubles was a wonderfully touching song which expressed the self-doubts that most of us live with and what it is like to be seen and loved right through our flaws. In all, there was so much of what it means to be human in this album: the pain of watching innocent people suffer because of other people's lack of empathy (Mis Hijos), and the sometimes desire just to give up (Mind to Leave.) I felt as if I had had a full tour through being a human being in this CD. And let me say again, beautiful, beautiful music and singing.
