Album Notes

Dennis Victor Allen is a singer/songwriter from Canada’s far north. Before his thirteenth birthday, he could sing at least one song from such artists as Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, and George Jones. Growing up in the tough frontier town of Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Dennis learned that playing guitar and singing Eagle’s songs got you into parties and out of scuffs, or into one, depending on the circumstance. His teenage friends introduced him to Jackson Brown and the Rolling Stones. His older brother introduced him to Kris Kristofferson. At one point he could sing every Kris song ever published. Then he heard the blues; Lightnin’ Sam Hopkins, Sonny Boy Williamson, and the duo of Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee. Throw all that music in a pot and stew it for twenty years and you got the sound of Dennis Victor Allen, bastard son of C&W, long lost brother of the blues.

Wayward Son by Dennis Allen

Anyone that has ever wandered off of the beaten path will appreciate this album. I spent much of my childhood in a small place called Salmon Valley. It is so small it isn't even a town. Not even a village. When I woke up in the mornings I might hear the likes of Hank Williams or Johnny Cash playing on the radio upstairs. As I grew up I was always experimenting, searching for new ways and new music, something real but different than what my parents had. Dennis Allen's album, “Wayward Son” brings that journey right back home. The rhythm section is larger than life. Everything from a perfect waltz, or a two step and even playing the blues so true the brimstone burns, these guys are so solid that you feel like you could just put your back into it and be held up by a wall of bass and rhythm. The guitar work on this album is colourful and tasty. Listen closely to the licks and you will hear a hundred years of guitar playing in the making. And to add even more to the flavour, the vocal harmonies on this album fill things out nicely. Dennis's writing has real depth. This is a guy who could write songs for the likes of Lucinda Williams or Wilco. And his voice is honest. I'm keeping an eye out for more albums from Dennis Allen. I get the feeling he's just getting started!

I loved every song on this CD. No offense to Dennis but I was totally surprised because I didn\'t know what to expect. My favorite to date is Learning How to Dance. We laugh alot because we know what Dennis is talking about. A beautiful CD, beautiful.
