Charlie Dentel is a dynamic performer who presents
a diverse mix of original music and standards rooted
in R&B and soul. Dentel performs with members of
the Motor City Horns, with whom he has recently
recorded a CD called Innocent Things. The new CD
features powerful original songs with an intelligent
and fresh soulful sound, filled up with exciting horn
arrangements and smashing vocals.
In January, 2000, Dentel released the CD Walls of Stone on Vortex Records. On Walls of Stone, Dentel
explores a more intimate side of his songwriting. Current Magazine wrote about Walls of Stone, "Dentel
immediately splits your heart with dappled soul rays of his folk-gospel-blues voice, singular presence,
and cleansing songcraft." Produced by Brian Delaney of the Ann Arbor based Royal Garden Trio,
Walls of Stone is a collection of stories about love and spirit in a folk/gospel setting.
"Finesse was the operative word....as Dentel's voice piped like a gospel organ, carefully modulating his delivery, with wonderful treatments of ballads."
Mark Ziemba, Current Magazine, Feb. 2001
"This guy is fantastic....His music is evocative, complex, tender and soulful."
Todd Spencer, Current Magazine, Apr. 1997

Quickly became a favorite!

This is the type of CD that always seems to change my mood for the better. The songs are original, with the exception of a fun rendition of Ray Charles' "What Would I Do?" One of my favorite tracks is "St. Angelina," which always makes me think of Elton John's "Burn Down the Mission." (Something about the chord progression leading into the chorus.) The melodies are lovely and fun to follow without being predictable; active listening is rewarded by the interesting arrangements with the horns and the vocal gymnastics of Charlie Dentel. You can always hear the smile in his voice--and this CD makes me smile. I'm glad I snatched it up!

Enjoyable and listenable

A beautifully arranged set of songs that work well in the context of the CD. Charlie's voice and piano along with the horns and the rest of the band had me smiling and my toes tapping.
