Dept. of Energy Biography:
Seattle's sublime pop threesome Dept. of Energy is comprised of Robb Benson (singer/guitarist), Ty Bailie (keyboards, organ) and Cassady Laton (drums). Like other great power trio's (Cream, The Police, The 3 Stooges), Dept. of Energy are a true example of the sum outweighing the individual parts. It is the mix of their individual enery and influences that creates the structure for the beautifully crafted album "Held By Waits".
"Held By Waits" is Dept. of Energy's first full length album and follows their critically acclaimed debut "EP" (released 2006 on Roam Records). Recorded by production guru Johnny Sangster (Lillydale, Mudhoney, The Posies) "Held By Waits" displays the talents of a band that has grown into its own. Rather than simply reproduce the style and sound of their initial release, they expand and improve upon it. The result...a combination of undeniable musicianship with songwriting that is both fresh and new, as well as mature at the same time. Imagine Brian Wilson joining the Shins or Johnny Marr joining Modest Mouse (OK - that actually happened).
"Held By Waits" will be released nationally on Tuesday, March 6, 2007 on Roam Records.

Never a disappointment

Any fan of Robb Benson's previous projects will love this album. Any fan of unique, introspective songwriting and pop melodies with complex underlying musicality will appreciate Dept. of Energy. I can't say I agree with CD baby's comparisons; Decemberists maybe but not the Shins. They've got a lot more backbone - the Shins are all airy and light and DOE can really dig in. I call them indie pop or rock, some use the term "emo" though I'm not really a fan of that label. Technically it does fit though. These songs get under your skin in a way that's pretty rare, for me at least. They've got it all; catchy hooks, rockin' guitar solos, interestingly profound lyrics - not too repetitive and not too far out there either. Accessible. I'm not exactly sure why these guys aren't more widely known. The live show is great - they've been playing together for a long time in one form or another and it shows. To top it all off, they are really nice guys and they are cute! Five stars.

We like to pick up "local" music to theme our vacation trips, so for my first visit to Seattle, we bought this album. What a great choice! Not only are the soothing melodies nice for cruising around the rainy mountainsides, but the complexity of the lyrics really gets you once you get it home. It's awesome to be enjoying an album for some time and then realizing, "Holy crap! THAT'S what this song is about!" We'll absolutely keep an eye out for concerts. Thanks guys!
