This may be Derek's first official cd, but this should not leave one to believe that music is something that Derek has just fallen into. This cd has been 5 years in the making. Many demos and re-workings finally put Derek in the place were he was able to develop his sound and perfect the ideas he had imagined. Pulling from early influences such as Dave Matthews and Ben Harper, then fusing it with the quirky and twangy guitars often found in such artists as Ryan Adams and Wilco, Derek developed a sound that is not easily categorized. Just when you hear one song and think you have his style down, the next song leads to thinking of an entire new set of influences. The self titled cd shows just how far recording has come in the home studio setting, and pushes it ever further in its commercial appeal and character. With help of his rhythm section of Randy Flinders (bass) and Mike Madden (drums), Derek fills in the gaps with vocals, guitars, banjo, loops, and much more.
