ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
In his second album, San Francisco Bay Area musician Derek Smith pays tribute to legendary musicians who developed the infectious rhythms and sounds that have come to define Latin jazz.

The spirit of this genre is innovation, and Smith exemplifies that spirit in "Latin Expression" by uniting the melodic brightness of the steel drum with the soulful resonance of the vibraphone. Smith uses the unique instrumentation to capture the musical expression of Latin jazz masters, such as Rafael Hernandez, Mario Bauza, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Mongo Santamaria.

In "Latin Expression," Smith also debuts an original song called "Mi Cancion." The song's hypnotic sound elegantly marries Dave Brubeck-like melodies and rhythmic nuances influenced by Brazilian classics, such as "Mas Que Nada."

The album achieves additional heights through the contributions of some of the Bay Area's most talented musicians, including pianist Jason Moen, percussionist Colin Douglas, drummer Mike Shannon, cello pannist Mark Rosenthal, and bassist Aaron Germain.

Mission accomplished
It's evident what Derek was aiming for on his new CD, Latin Expression. It had to be danceable, yet entertaining to the listener. After all, isn't that what great latin jazz music is all about?
Of course, it helps that he has some mad skills on steelpan and vibes, both featured prominently on the CD. But it all starts with, selection.
Derek carefully chose those savoury latin jazz classics that served as a perfect canvas for marrying "the melodic brightness of the steel drum with the soulful resonance of the vibraphone".
The high standard of musicanship is immediately evident and consistent throughout the album with contributions from some top Bay Area talents, especially bassist Aaron Germain with some riveting solos on Mi Cancion (a Smith original), El Cumbanchero and So Danco.
You'll be moved to dance to Latin Expression, but you could just as easily sit by the pool and sip on a maitai while the music takes you to your favorite island fantasy.

Lovin' the groove! The vibe is right! Makes you want to get up and start moving your feet. Pass the margarita's man!

Latin Expression
Now here is a cd that embodies the roots of calypso pan music with a tasteful fusion of jazz. A must have cd for pan players or for those that just like good music.
