Derin Dow is a rock vocalist, guitarist/bassist, and songwriter in Los Angeles. He and his band perform in the southern California area, and have opened shows for Asia (w/John Payne), Shaw-Blades, Ambrosia, and Eric Johnson at venues such as the House of Blues (Sunset), the Key Club, and the Brixton South Bay.
Originally from Madison, Indiana, Derin started out as the lead guitarist in a high school cover band called Aura (1981-88). He moved to Los Angeles in 1989, and later became a bassist/vocalist in various L.A.-based bands, among them 4-Life and the Waifs. In 1992, he fronted a prog band called The Unknown in collaboration with guitarist Mark Keller. In addition to writing, recording, and performing with bands, he has also co-composed the music scores for three independent films.
On his 2005 solo release RETROACTIVE, Derin delivers 13 original songs, featuring hi-energy rockers like "Friday" and "Right Side Of The Road," spiritual cuts "Signature," "Runnin To Win" and "Highways," and the power ballads "Door To Your Heart" and "I Do Love You." Also included are the infectious tunes "Inside," "River Of Time," "Slave Train," and "Passage," along with two instrumentals - "Lower The Boom" and "Feelin' Free."
Self-produced by Dow, RETROACTIVE delivers a raw, 70's/80's sound that is almost live. The album is loaded with vocal harmonies, guitar solos, and some extended jamming, firmly planting it in the retro/classic rock genre. Guest musicians include guitarist Chris Pinnick, drummer Chet McCracken, keyboardists Jim Lang and Paul McDonald, bassist Paulo Gustavo, and guitarist Mark Keller.
Dow appears on his own independent label, Crapshoot Music, and is currently seeking management. He works by day as a school teacher in South L.A.
