Tanuja Desai Hidier's first novel, the South Asian American coming of age story BORN CONFUSED, is both a Larry King and Sunday Times book of the week, a Publishers Weekly and Kirkus Reviews star choice, and ALA BBYA book of the year. Tanuja recently adapted BORN CONFUSED into a screenplay and plans are in the works to make it into a movie.
On the music front, Tanuja is lead singer/a songwriter in the NYC-based band T&A (with ATOM FELLOWS) and the London-based group San Transisto (with BEN CAPLAN, JON FIBER, ROBIN PRICE, & ANNE-MARIE TUEJE).
WHEN WE WERE TWINS is their cross-Atlantic collaboration of original songs based on BORN CONFUSED, and was achieved with much use of broadband, red wine, and long-distance singing/strumming. The CD also features songs cowritten/produced with JEFF COHEN of Pancho's Lament, MIKE SHIMSHACK, London's MUKUL, and NYC's very own DJ REKHA.
WHEN WE WERE TWINS was picked up by Creative Artists Agency/Youth Intelligence as a first-of-its-kind cutting-edge trend of the future (the 'booktrack'), and is featured in December 2004's issue of Wired Magazine ("Books with a Backbeat").
All of the above players were in the same room together for the first time for the WHEN WE WERE TWINS CD launch party at Joe's Pub in New York City. The event was a New York Magazine star pick of the week, Time Out New York clubs section highlight, and Flavorpill choice (see below):
"[Born Confused is]a teen-spirited coming-of-age novel about a second-generation Indian-American girl overcoming the travails of culture clash...Not many books come with soundtracks, but tonight's occasion experiments with the latest brand of multimedia melting pot: the book reading with a live soundtrack. NYC's resident Indian diva of the decks, DJ Rekha! , drops a custom, prose-complementing mix, and [Desai] Hidier's bands, San Transisto, and Billyburg's T&A add to the confusion." --Flavorpill

In their previous incarnation, as NYC's punk-pop band io, they were finalists in Oxygen's nationwide band contest, and regularly played NYC's CBGBs, Mercury Lounge, The Elbow Room, as well as for the charity Rock and Wrap It Up, the last effort a collaboration with MTV. Now recently and trans-Atlantically reformed, they're ready to rock again. LOVE this MUSIC !!!!
author: DeeDeeFirst I read the book BC. I laughed. I cried. Then someone I know(and LOVE)turned me on to the music. I have listened to it so many times that my kids know the words. We sing along in the car. Tanuja has such a beautiful voice!! I would love to hear it live!! Love DeeDee (bearly older sister)

After reading the book, I wasnt sure if the CD would match the quality of the book. It turns out that it didnt reach the true poetry that i thought the book contained and I was surprised not to hear a more Indian influence.
The best music I have heard in a long time!
author: AlkaLoving the CD!! The music is so incredibly funky and I've already emailed T about my fave songs from the album. Im always blasting this cd on my stero so everyone in my family listens to it too!! The music has a no doubt (the gwen steffani band) vibe about it crossed between jon bon jovi, madonna and pink in a unique and awesome way!! Well done T and thanks for some fantastic listening material! It's hard to come by these days. Love Alka xx
Totally cool
author: DimpleTop notch to Beutiful eyed Tanuja Desai Hidier. From one author to another, this woman knows her metaphors, the cd was just what I ecxpected and just what i was looking for. This has everything you could want in a cd, and then some. I've read the book born confused about five times now, and listened to her cd a countless number of times, keep up the good work! I'll be searching for more work from this author! Namaskar!

When We Were Twins kind of dissapionted me because I thought that it would bring a little bit of more indian music into the mix, but overall the lyrics and the emotions were right on but the music did not convince me much.Tanuja's voice was great and really real. I loved the book though it was great!! The CD I think didn't capture all of the stuff that happened in the book...
An amazing cd of inspiration.
author: LaurenWhen We Were Twins was a magical CD that incorporated a lot of the emotions that were developed in Born Confused. Listening to the songs was like listening to words of wisdom from an older sister. With meaningful lyrics, all the themes of life were expressed in the songs-- friendship, love, and self-discovery.
Awesome
author: ArielleWhen I read Tanuja's book Born Confused I was inspired. I logged onto her website and clicked to this link. When I first listened to the songs, I thought they were kindof weird, but after I listened to the lyrics, I was completely hooked. I thought I was hypnotized or something. Tanuja's voice drifted me into a state of wonder and intensity. Her song When We Were Twins made me very emotional. I would have to rate that song a 10 out of 10. This CD is awesome.
Expect the Unexpected
author: LucíaAlthough I'm not quite sure what I expected, When We Were Twins was still different from what I thought it would be like. I guess considering how much Indian music was mentioned in the book, I thought there might be some bhangra or something similar in the CD. I was a bit surprised when it turned out to be more folk-based music. (Not that I'm complaining.) In general, it still matched the tone and feel of the book fairly well. At first, it took me a while to decide if I liked it or not, but now I don't regret getting it. Plus, it was really awesome to hear Tanuja's physical voice, instead of just her "writing voice." The songs were quite inspiring, just like the book. It really helps you to get into a good mood.

Well, I thought born confused was a great book, but when I heard a cd was coming out based on the novel, I didn't know what to make of it. I thought it would be kinda crappy, and would mess up the greatness of the book. I was wrong! The cd is absolutely fantastic, from start to finish! I was a little relucant at first, but after the first track i was hooked. They cd isn't cheesy, and over produced like I thought it would be. Instead it is raw and edgy, and the songs really do go w/ the theme of the book! Tanuja's voice is so real and fitting, that you think she's right in the room w/ you! The lyrics are great, and the band plays their instruments well. This CD might not be a must buy, but it is definetly worth checking out!
