Tanuja Desai Hidier's first novel, the South Asian American coming of age story BORN CONFUSED, is both a Larry King and Sunday Times book of the week, a Publishers Weekly and Kirkus Reviews star choice, and ALA BBYA book of the year. Tanuja recently adapted BORN CONFUSED into a screenplay and plans are in the works to make it into a movie.

On the music front, Tanuja is lead singer/a songwriter in the NYC-based band T&A (with ATOM FELLOWS) and the London-based group San Transisto (with BEN CAPLAN, JON FIBER, ROBIN PRICE, & ANNE-MARIE TUEJE).

WHEN WE WERE TWINS is their cross-Atlantic collaboration of original songs based on BORN CONFUSED, and was achieved with much use of broadband, red wine, and long-distance singing/strumming. The CD also features songs cowritten/produced with JEFF COHEN of Pancho's Lament, MIKE SHIMSHACK, London's MUKUL, and NYC's very own DJ REKHA.

WHEN WE WERE TWINS was picked up by Creative Artists Agency/Youth Intelligence as a first-of-its-kind cutting-edge trend of the future (the 'booktrack'), and is featured in December 2004's issue of Wired Magazine ("Books with a Backbeat").

All of the above players were in the same room together for the first time for the WHEN WE WERE TWINS CD launch party at Joe's Pub in New York City. The event was a New York Magazine star pick of the week, Time Out New York clubs section highlight, and Flavorpill choice (see below):

"[Born Confused is]a teen-spirited coming-of-age novel about a second-generation Indian-American girl overcoming the travails of culture clash...Not many books come with soundtracks, but tonight's occasion experiments with the latest brand of multimedia melting pot: the book reading with a live soundtrack. NYC's resident Indian diva of the decks, DJ Rekha! , drops a custom, prose-complementing mix, and [Desai] Hidier's bands, San Transisto, and Billyburg's T&A add to the confusion." --Flavorpill

After reading the book, I wasnt sure if the CD would match the quality of the book. It turns out that it didnt reach the true poetry that i thought the book contained and I was surprised not to hear a more Indian influence.
