It's true-that there hasn't been a heavy focus on that laid-back acoustic slow jams that goes back to the old school style and flavor of classic tunes from some of our greatest artist, such as Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gay. Now with the rebirth of new age renaissance comes the resurgence of an old school style along with a touch of classic and Reggae grooves. He will lead the way to bring back the music to where it once was? Bedford-Stuyvesant's own Deshawn Hill a.k.a 'CHALANT'. Born in a household filled with musical talent, he experimented with different genres in his youth. "Because of the varied exposure I grew up with, I developed a passion for different types of music." Deshawn delivers the goods in a glorious voice and has released his first album of the 21st century "TIRED OF RUNNING". The album is a diverse blend of ballads including "Wooooo" a Reggae groove (written by Deshawn and produced by SONIQ, for Nucleus Entertainment, LLC). In the same vein, with love as the theme, "Keep On" written by Deshawn and produced by SONIQ, is a laid-back slow jam that goes back to an old school style of the Temptations & Earth Wind and Fire. In contrast, "Somebody" a track written by Deshawn and produced by SONIQ details the inevitable ups and downs of relationships. If u were to trace the origin of Deshwan on a map, your pencil would without doubt begin in New York City. Then, you would have to outline the borough of Brooklyn, continuing until you locate Bedford-Stuyvesant. It was there that Deshawn set his target for success as a result of him and his eight siblings being subjected to poverty and the violence of the streets of New York City. Determined to transcend his surroundings, Deshawn's mom pursed other ventures for her sixteen-year-old son. With determination, faith, and confidence, Deshawn begin his next journey to the streets of Birmingham.
Now, u would need to focus and concentrate very hard to trace the origin of New York to Birmingham, and then strain your cornea to locate Bessemer. As you can see, the journey mileage and driving time is very long and surely tiresome. It was there that Deshawn hustled on the crime-rippled streets. There were dangerous neighborhoods full of drugs, gangs and poverty that drained the spirit out of nearly everyone that lived there. It was back then in 1995 where his life was nearly abruptly taken away from him. Driving back home one night, Deshawn was fatally shot in which he sustained injuries that left his right arm fractured in three places. "I have flashbacks of what happened everyday, Deshawn confesses. And anytime I hear about someone getting shot, my heart skips a beat and I thank the Lord that I'm still here." Deshawn had found out how short life really is and how blessed he is to be here. At this point, he was tired of running the streets and decided to get married and start a family. This is how the CD's promotional single, "TIRED OF RUNNING" (produced & written by Deshawn) came about. This is an infectious song about surviving, spirituality, and the need to want to chill out, relax and get away from the stresses of everyday life. Being inspired by his brothers, sister & host of others in the family he was always performing shows like Tuxedo Junction with Duke Ellington grand daughter Mercedes and Blues singer Poonanny, Joe Burns & Melwaters, traveled with Johnny Taylor and a host of others. Performed a solo for one of our greatest artist "Bobby Brown" sister's wedding. Open Shows for Brian Mc Knight and Christopher Williams.
With a vision, great determination and confidence, Deshawn decided to move to Atlanta to purse his music career. Now, to trace this origin is very simple. Traveling time is about one hour and Deshawn's last stop. Time was so short, Deshawn had the opportunity to stay close to his mom and siblings. Deshawn begin musically hustling on the streets of Douglasville, Ga. He then moved on to the Decatur and finally settling in Lithonia, Ga. Ok; you can now put your pencil away. Deshawn stayed busy with production, writing, singing, dancing, acting, and a host of other things within entertainment hoping to one day allow the world to hear his work. If you're in the music industry, long hours and traveling is a must in order to succeed (U feel me?). In the moment of crisis sometime your manager won't return your call, your sideman is wasted, but most importantly your girl or man is angry with u. DeShawn began trusting 'cats' out in the streets and singing at Karaoke spots. "Big Up to my fans in Atlanta GA." With limited resources, moving from place to place, constantly running.....running......and running it began to discourage Deshawn. He promised the lord that he would turn his life around and never go back to the streets. Unlike some 'cats' that falsely brag about living a struggling life, Deshawn truly did and he tells his story in the song "Understanding the Game" which details his knowledge of the streets, maturity and being a Dad. Deshawn stayed focused by reading his bible and humbling himself. In December of 2003, a remarkable thing happened immediate after Christmas. Deshawn used his love for music as inspiration to move back North to conquer the music industry.
Currently, he has completed his first CD..... let me tell u, it's 'HOT'! He's currently writing and producing his second CD. Their u have it...... a humble man that will take the industry by storm with class. So, take that pencil back out and sharpen it.
