Album Notes

This singer, songwriter and musical interpreter of tremendous depth and passion is considered by many to be Scotland's premier singer. He has one of the finest and most sublime voices on the planet, capable of capturing the heart with the most tender of traditional ballads in one moment and stirring the fire of the spirit with his uncompromising commentary on social injustice in the next.

Dick Gaughan is deeply committed to fighting social injustice and standing up for the common man in the face of oppression. As an indefatigable worker among workers, Dick was often found collecting on street corners for the miners during their last strike and has supported workers throughout his career through fund-raising concerts. His unwavering belief in the strength of the human spirit to conquer seemingly insurmountable obstacles has fueled Dick's commitment to singing new songs and reworking old ones to point out the essential optimism and belief in humanity's ability to stand up and be free. In this, he has become a leading voice in the topical song movement and has inspired an entire generation of songwriters, such as Billy Bragg, who has recorded and sung with Dick. His 1980 masterpiece album, "Handful of Earth", was voted by a Folk Roots critic's poll as "the album of the decade."

He is an unforgettable artist, able to change the way that you think and feel through the power of music.

Gaughan at his fiery best
author: Mahir Ali
This album was recorded during the miners' strike in Britain, and Dick Gaughan is in a polemical mood, doing justice to songs by the likes of Ewan MacColl, Leon Rosselson, Tommy Sands and Tommy Makem. His rewritten-for-the-moment take on Which Side Are You On? is a nice (and suitably angry) example of the folk process. Gaughan has made many excellent albums, but if you want to find out what he's all about, this is not a bad place to start.

Great live performance on his return from voice troubles
author: Ryan
Gaughan gives a terrific performance here mixed with the sharp little bits of political commentary that mark his live shows as different from his studio albums. The event is an important one for him, charged with the emotion of returning from the trouble with his voice that left him unable to talk or sing for months. He comes back out with virtuoso work for much of this long CD. His voice does tire near the end, and for those wanting exquisite versions of those last few tracks, see his albums of that era - those songs are jewels done much better elsewhere. Except for those last two-three tracks, an INCREDIBLE record.
