"Celtic fusion" for the creative Celt... modernistic duo takes traditional tunes and faery-styles them to create a new sound; nothing but two acoustic harps, but you won't believe that after you hear it.

notes
Dhá Chlairseach is an intermittent duo, made up of solo performers Aisling (Máirín ní Dubhtheach) and Irminsul, playing Lyon and Healy Troubadours, models III and IV respectively. Our sound is an attempt to honor the spirit of the "aisling" or poetic vision, of the old bards, with the philosophy that even an old tune ought to be new-made each time you play it.
Aisling is a player on the Celtic harp, playing professionally in several bands and as a soloist in Salt Lake City and the Intermountain West since 1987. She plays from the classic Irish, Scots, English and Welsh folk repertory, and writes original New Age, Pagan and Celtic music, as well as fitting original lyrics to existing tunes. (Yes, filking--at the drop of a note, and some say interminably!) In addition to performing on her Troubadour and the Witcher Gothic lap harp, she experiments with the bowed psaltery, autoharp and various forms of percussion. Her latest endeavors include teaching herself how to do more than plunk at the keyboard, learning to sing whilst playing (a complex process!) and learning how to dance while harping...really!
Irminsul is a consummate instrumentalist--we have yet to find the instrument he DOESN'T play. His background includes the formation of several thrash bands, including Wynken, Blynken and God, and Fervid Torpor, which pretty much describes his personality as well as his innate musical bent. (Yes, bent is appropriate!) But the harp is a relatively new (albeit exceptionally successful) endeavor, as he has been playing only since 1994. Suffice it to say that his new band, Stone Circle, has a CD out that has been positively reviewed by several Irish music magazines...not bad for a Utah boy!
Sometime in the summer of 1995, Irmy and Aisling began to notice that the harping they did together had a certain flavor they hadn't seen before. Irminsul is unable to forget his background as a thrash rocker and Aisling even filks (read "dinks with") tunes, let alone lyrics...So. Something different. We began thinking of it as the "aural tradition"...what happens when you hear what lies BEHIND what's there, and can you play that? And our explorations into answering that question led us to develop a rather distinctive acoustic folk harp sound. We call it Celtic fusion, and we really can't describe it except to say it is the synthesis of the unforgettable tunes of the Celts with the irrepressible (some say unspeakable!) creativity of a couple of American Pagan bards. Old tunes given a twist, new tunes with harmony lines we didn't write and no one is playing...but they're there! Experiments with improvisation, key and tempo tweaking, enharmonics, "breaks" mid-tune (think acoustic Dead), parallel melodic lines (some composed on the spot!) and all sorts of other variety characterize our sound. It is our firm belief that any Celt who is a musician is making authentically Celtic music, and our goal is to honor the spirit of the oral tradition by devising constantly various and interesting ways to present old tunes freshly. And there are a few other little tricks we use to characterize our sound...but...they're a 3rd degree secret. To figure them out...buy the music!!!
