This exciting new cooperative quartet combines elements of North Indian classical music with jazz. Band member Badal Roy is respected worldwide for his pioneering work with Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Dizzy Gillespie, and many more of the most famous names in jazz.
The repertory of Dharma Jazz includes traditional Indian ragas, original compositions by the group members, and jazz classics such as "Maiden Voyage" (in Porter's version, called "Another Voyage"), "Naima," "Impressions" and the blues. The sound of Dharma Jazz innovates through unique instrumentation -- two melody instruments (guitar and keyboard) and two percussionists (tabla and eclectic percussion). This gives the music a spaciousness and airiness that captivates audiences. As well, it adds to the aura of freedom and improvisation that inspires these extraordinary musicians.
