Album Notes

The "Dhow Crossing" CD is a result of a three year collaboration between students and teachers of DCMA (Zanzibar) and Agder University College (Norway). The musical cross-over project was part of a Norad funded program. Recordings and concerts evolved through exchange visits between both institutions and countries. The result is a new musical landscape that has merged traditional Zanzibari Taarab, Norwegian folk and western popular music - perfectly fused without changing the wonderful laidback character of the music. The CD is available for sale at DCMA and other local retailers in Zanzibar and distributed internationally by Kultur & Spetakkel.

The Taarab music is a mix of arab, african and indian influences from trade and cultural exchange along the traditional Dhow trade routes in the Indian Ocean. On this cd a respectful meeting with traditonal norwegian song traditions and modern instruments makes a wonderful crossover music. The production is really tasty and the songs emotional impact is enhanced by the vital and delicate arrangements. A cd you should not miss....
