Never Home To Stay

From intimate cricket songs to the void of space, Diane French's second full-length release, This Trick, throws light on shifting geographies, perspectives and emotional terrain. Recorded in Boulder, Colorado, it represents French's deepest and most layered work to date. Rich, textural guitar work by Todd Ayers (co-producer of French's 2001 release, No Cool Bone) and Eben Grace (recently of Dan Bern) underlie the sophisticated structure of French's writing. This Trick also features several distinctive appearances by experimental jazz trumpet player Ron Miles (recently featured on Joe Henry's Tiny Voices) whose unmistakable style pairs perfectly with French's slightly left-of-center phrasing.

When alt-country maverick Jim White heard the rough tracks from This Trick last summer, he called it "intimate yet remote, dreamy yet visceral, suffused with a mysterious, silent rage." He asked French to join his band as keyboardist/vocalist on his tour behind his latest release, Drill a Hole In That Substrate and Tell Me What You See. They spent several months playing in Europe and then opening for Lucinda Williams and Wilco in the United States and Canada. Once French got home to Colorado, she was ready to focus on finishing her own record.

French says that working with White taught her a lot. "Jim was a showman and at the same time totally unaffected. The way he approaches his music showed me the risks I was and wasn't taking in my own work. It made me want to push beyond my own comfort zone more than I had been." The result is music that is mysterious, grinding and sultry, with a sound uniquely defined by French's thick, intoxicating vocals.

Sound is smooth as butta
I have loved Diane since I was turned onto her after I met her at a Chris Whitley concert in Boulder about 3 yrs ago and she continues to captivate me. Diane, I can't wait to hear your next c.d.

her use of silence is excruciatingly beautiful
not since listening to joni mitchell's blue have i heard an artist as frighteningly vulnerable and powerful as Diane French. Her music emits from the heart and cuts like a samurai sword

Haunting - and outstanding!
This is an excellent album and deserves to become widely downloaded - believe me. It's not mainstream, or even easy, but it is subtly textured, moody, reflective and stunningly crafted. Lyrics, instrumentation, vocals and blues-jazz tinged arrangements are all first class. It's one of those albums to listen to alone, late in the evening. It will make you happy to be sad, or sad to be happy for sure. (Post Script: three months later, it is still an outstanding - and enduring - album!)

A beautiful moody CD
I saw Diane French when she supported Jim White in Edinburgh last year and when my wife bought her first CD on a whim, I borrowed it and was hooked. I searched the web by chance and was delighted to learn that she had another coming out. The parts of this disk that I like are very quiet and moody, and for me it works best through headphones or in a quiet room. I'm going to listen to it A LOT, and hope that Diane will be encouraged to keep on this path.

One year and uncountable spins after, i can only say that Diane must be one of the most gifted creatures on earth. "This Trick" is a truly remarkable piece of art. Mesmerizing.

Milk-teeth beauty
This needs to be released in ENGLAND immediately. I heard 'From This House' on PANDORA a couple of weeks ago and was so enchanted I spent the following three days obsessively listening to a 1 minute extract of the song on her website, desperate for the next 2 minutes! Having bought the CD online I haven't been disappointed with the rest of the album. Diane has the most beautiful, milk-teeth voice with a subtle hint of the classical. Wonderful stuff.

This is the first cd I've heard by Diane and it's lovely indeed. Her voice is a rare combination of strenghth and a quiet, almost hushed, soul. She has sympathetic support for her supporting musicians who do the right thing - namely, let her voice remain front and center. Yet you only need to listen to Charcoal heart, where she accompanies herself on acoustic guitar alone, or North, where she does the same on piano, to realize that having supporting musicians is strictly an option for someone with so beautiful a voice. This whole cd is wonderful from start to finish, from achingly beautiful songs as such as From This House, Charcoal, North, and Terminal Velocity to the simmering Trajectory or the quiet power of Blue Shed Song. Great voice, lyrics, and musicianship - she has it all going on!
