Album Notes

Diane Landry brings the sound of southern swing full-tilt on this, her long-overdue debut release.

"It's a Lovely Day" is a hard-driving, greasy session which shatters any expectations of another delicate chanteuse lazily wandering through the American Songbook. By contrast, Landry's soulful voice smacks of a tradition inspired by the rich culture of the Gulf Coast, but also has a maturity in phrasing associated with the great voices of our day. Combined with pianist/arranger Matt Lemmler's reharmonizations and world-class playing, the session treats the listener to the exciting sound of 21st century New Orleans jazz. You will marvel at how they stylishly revitalize worn chestnuts like "Good Morning Heartache" and "Blue Moon". Recorded in the Crescent City with mostly local players including the great John Ellis on saxophone, "It's a Lovely Day" is bound to get national attention both for its unique point of view and the exceptional musicianship displayed throughout.

Diane Landry's vocals are smoky and bluesy. Call Me is one of the steamiest proposals I've ever heard, and talk about intimate--her version of You've Changed "tears by me out the heart", to quote an Al Cohn title. Matt Lemmler is a pianist of rare originality and a point of view about standard songs that's always surprising and often quirky. Landry and Lemmler work well together because they are each exponents of hot jazz, meaning they approach their material with energy, a terrific beat, and impassioned authority.

Diane Landry will be a new name to many in the jazz and popular music world . . . Her debut CD, “It’s A Lovely Day”, reveals her to be both youthful and mature in her interpretations of lyrics, she is blessed with a beautiful voice, and she always swings . . . Ms. Landry is a singer who deserves national fame. With the release of “It’s A Lovely Day”, a perfect showcase for her subtle improvising and swinging style, Diane Landry will certainly gain recognition for her cool, intimate and wonderful voice.
