notes

The Diary is a burst of fresh new New Wave in a confused world. Using fast beats and fuzzy tones, this is being called one of the best indie released albums of the year!

With this new album, Claude S. blends digital electronics with a tip of the hat to late 70's punk, recalling the innocent stylings of the New York school of New Wave.

Using a lo-fi acoustic drum set, a 1965 SG and his computer, this era is brought to modern focus under Claude's surrealist gaze. You can dance to it, you can play it loud for your enemies, all the while escaping the realities of the bleak landscape of today's musical suicide.

Be careful, this music can induce emotional outbursts and become a soundtrack to the future.

The underlying theme of this album is Claude's life itself. He drowned in a lake, kissed a girl underwater, toured all over the world, and has documented it in the art itself. Here, the 'diary' is open for all to read. These songs ask the question, "Are we all truly separate?" Find out if there's an answer...

You can download the song, 'Give Up The Monsters' for FREE when you visit the Artist's site. If you like Joy Division, Interpol, Anything Box, New Order, Radiohead, Buzzcocks and Ladytron... Look Out!

COMMENTS FROM THE ARTIST:
-------

"When I was 10 years old, my family and I went to a place in New Jersey known as Seven Lakes. As soon as I got out of the car, my cousins and I headed for the water. I jumped in from a diving board and went straight down, losing my air as I hit the water. I panicked, and began flaying in the water, knowing full well that I was drowning. That's when reality faded to white...

As I lost consciousness, my life began to playback in my mind as a series of dream films, in a way that all space and time was distorted and infinite. I marvelled at this even as I drowned, and when it seemed that no rescue was in sight, I gave up. I sunk to the depths of the lake, watching the sunlight above me through the water as I passed out. completely.

I found myself in a white room, bathed in white, with no obvious doors or windows, and I felt a strange warmth. I saw the bare outline of a door and noticed it had a handle. As I reached for it, I felt a sucking sensation and I was pulled back from death's door. I had been rescued, and someone was pumping water out of my lungs. Needless to say, the family vacation was cancelled.

The side-effect of that event was profound. Firstly, I had guitar lessons, which I'd hated and thus my guitar sat in a corner of the room, gathering dust. After the drowning, I picked it up and began to write. My pictures, mostly of space ships and war scenes began to shift into a more surreal take on things. I began reading more, painting more, feeling more. I matured quickly, and I am convinced to this day that drowning had everything to do with my creative outflow. And then...

At twelve or thirteen, my family went to the beach. I met a dark-skinned girl, very beautiful, building a sand castle there. I sat down next to her and we exchanged a few words. She asked me if I had ever kissed underwater. I said no. I was nervous. I knew what was coming next. 'Do you want to try it?' she asked. I nodded my head yes and we went into the ocean. As we kissed the drowning sensation (which manifested itself from the earlier trauma) was replaced by a feeling of profound peace and serentiy, as well as excitement . Her lips were like a toxic candy that once tasted, would never be forgotten, and I will never forget that kiss. There have been others of course, memorable ones without a doubt, but that was my first and it was underwater. A secondary death, you could say. Years later I would still write about that kiss. I never saw her again by the way...

Around this time, I discovered 60's stuff; The Beatles, Kinks, The Who, etc... Shortly thereafter, Punk, electronic stuff like Kraftwerk, Joy Division, Depeche Mode, and New Order. With all these experiences in tow, my fate was sealed when my father gambled away all our savings. My mother divorced him. Music and Art became my escape and my reel-to-reel my way of dealing with the pain. I became both an antenna and a transmitter of repressed emotions.
In other words, I became an artist."

  • A computer geek’s venture into punk rock and I like it.
    author: Smother.Net

Using his home computer, an inherited SG, and a bass, The Diary’s Claude S. writes punk rock songs that sound like old Capcom Nintendo games through a distortion pedal. The beats remind me of garage rock at times but with more eclectic production. The synopsis is that this is a computer geek’s venture into punk rock and I like it. - J-Sin

  • Must have CD of 2005!
    author: Tim D.

If you don't buy another CD this year, go out or stay in and get this CD immediately. Claude's beautiful vocals sends the listener to far off places. The music wraps you and envelopes you like a celestial blanket of stars and wonders. Okay enough with the similies and metaphores...Separate moved me emotionally...listening to Claude's personal experiences in the songs made me think about my own. Absolutely stimulating. Go buy it. Now. CDnow.

  • Overwhelming psychedelic listening
    author: Marco

Time was created to recall experiences. With the use of the wonderful tool of music, Claude S. had created this marvelous trail for the free use of those who believe in the power of traveling while your eyes remain closed.

  • These are songs that can change you!
    author: MP3 Postcards.com

The Diary is a burst of fresh air and 1978-1981 nostalgia mixed with the mind of broken robots, epunk, new wave and pop. These are songs that can change you.

  • This is timeless!
author: Paul R. / The Lamented

Familiar voice, new subjects, new sounds, new arrangements, new thinking, and it rocks me like no other. It rocked me while giving me the goods: songs, emotions, and most importantly, Claude. My faith is restored in music and, better yet, me. I connected with an album and I don't feel old. I feel great, enthused, alive, and my itch for something new and wonderful is being so wonderfully scratched. (Edited from original)

  • This is absolutely classic!
    author: Ayyax

First impressions are that this is absolutely classic, the songs are intended to evoke feelings of the post-punk era while looking toward future and the album does this perfectly. Paul is right, Claude how do you do this over and over again? Excellent stuff.

  • This is really good stuff
    author: Allie Leblanc

I first heard The Diary when I visited www.myspace.com/claudeisthediary and I checked out "Monsters". I was blown away... Normally I wouldn't buy this type of music. I'm more of a pure rock girl. I hate punk and most things associated with it. No offense. But this CD did something strange to me. I can't stop listening to it. If this is what New Wave is, I'm in!

  • This CD belongs EVERYWHERE!
    author: Mario Valenzuela (CA)

This is definitely vintage, old school, original, new, inspired, groundbreaking, innovative, Claude S. Don't know what to say except that I love the sound, lyrics, and what it made me feel. Where does it belong? In a diary, main stream radio, on my computer, in my head, everywhere, abox, old box, new box, ON ITS OWN? I guess I learned something here. It doesn't matter where it belongs or what it sounds like, its someone's art and I loved it. It belongs everywhere.....

  • Really Inspiring!
    author: Tony

Very nice song (Monsters) - really inspiring. I'd say the Beatles influence shines through more than anything else. Definitely holds its own. Going on my iPod.

  • Excellent. Totally redeems the crap from "Page One."
    author: Victor Hernandez

Great CD. Far, far, faaaaar better than the crappy The Diary: Page One. In fact I liked it better than most of the last Anything Box album. I enjoyed the raw "screw it, lets just jam" quality of the music and overall the whole CD is worth the time--unlike The Effects of Stereo TV, which is 50% good and 50% crappy. This record is good in 100% of the songs (except for maybe the very first song, My First Kiss, which is too slow compared to the rest of the songs in the record). I agree with one of the early reviews; an accoustic version would be great. Or a live version would also be interesting.

  • A great listen!
    author: Steve B

The Diary: Separate is quite a change for Claude S and the music of Anything Box. Playing all the instruments, Claude has come up with an album loaded with great beats and catchy sing-along choruses. The album, although exploring Claude's personal life, is one you're bound to enjoy and want to share with others. Fast-paced and highly addictive, each song grows on one another to make a truly "complete" album. No filler here, just 100% great songs.

  • Awesome psychadelic experience
    author: Steven Isaacson

This CD contains the totally awesome psychadelic track “Give up the Monsters.” Probably one of my favorite tracks on the CD. The album is full of rockin’ pop songs that are beatlesque with a touch of electronics all wrapped up by Claude to make for a wondeful experience. Go give this album a listen. This is definately one of this stand out albums of 2005 so far.

  • author: cousinofelvis

  • Take me back to the easy life.
    author: Suzi

This CD takes me back to the days of no mortgage, no job, free food at home and a carefree time. Claude S. has done it again, made a masterpiece to stand the test of time. Very honest lyrics with very moving music. OUTSTANDING!

  • Beautiful colors in such a grey world...
    author: Blueoktober

Short and sweet, Claude continues to amaze. For anyone that is completely disgusted with the sad state of the music world right now, give this cd a try. Of course it does help to be a child of the 70s/80s to completely appreciate the vibe here, but ANYONE that is looking for some decent experimental pop music will find something to like. After the first listen it can seem simplistic, but like the best albums in history you will find it much deeper on every listen. Comparisons with the Beatles isn't totally off key, but then again I can hear some 70s punk going on as well. I just wanted to write this for Claude. I have followed your music since 1989 and although I might not love each album equally, I am ALWAYS amazed at your ability to create music that stands above the rest. Thanks for taking me back to a happy place with this album and cannot wait to see what you do next!

  • This album is clearly one of the best albums of 2005.
    author: Grave Concerns Ezine

Best known as a founding member of the highly successful electro-rock (elecktrodelic) band “Anything Box”, the man simply known as Claude S. has finally released the highly anticipated album “Separate”. This marks his second album following the release of “Page One” in 1995. It seems with this album; Claude has decided to revisit a certain era of time. When I listen, he takes me there with him. This journey sends us through the late 70s-early 80’s post-punk movement but adds unique elements that suggest a new era. Claude has added his familiar vocal brilliance with well written songs such as “Give Up The Monsters” and “Everything Ends”. These songs tend to get inside of you and provoke a connection between you and the music. With unique and catchy musings, it reminds us that this is how music should make us feel. This realization is confirmed again as I listen to the track “My Weakness Is Your Illusion”. “Separate” continues to push the boundaries and restores belief that there are still musicians out there that don’t compromise their creativity to cater to the music industry. This album is clearly one of the best albums of 2005. --- Matthew Willis GraveConcernsEzine.com
