REVIEWS

author: J. Free
The fourth offering from German jazz-meisters Die Erben ("The Heirs"), this album playfully cross-references a variety of seemingly unrelated styles, melding them together in a tight-knit groove. These tracks are as reminiscent of early-'70s jazz-funk fusion, as swinging New Orleans soul and even hints of Klezmer orchestration, yet burst with an energy that is vibrant and fresh, and uniquely their own. The brilliant reed-work and brass counterpoint throughout this album gives voice to a wide range of expression, from humorous staccato riffs to thoughtful, spacious glissandos. Funky bass lines and percolating keyboard melodies strut and weave confidently, each drawing strength from their own nearly understated presence. In fact, the chief dynamic employed by this group seems to be one of cunning restraint - the main ingredient in the recipe for letting go here, is to hold on. A refreshing new twist on jazz, that's been right there the whole time.
