The First Step lets you know where this album is headed. This is instrumental, progressive fusion. I enjoy the variety of directions Robert takes. I like the aggressive passages as well as the somber ones. The nice thing is that he can pack both neatly into the same songs. He spices things up by throwing some spoken parts into a couple of the songs and even offering two vocals. I really like the second vocal part on Brothers. That is some serious soul. Overall, it is a quality listen. Thanks Robert! I'll be waiting for the follow-up.

For fans of early John Mclaughlin or Al DiMeola.

A good choice for fans of the jazz rock extrapolations of early John Mclaughlin and Al DiMeola, Deepin the Mystery is the 2003 CD debut from Upstate New York guitarist Robert DiMaio. Various players admirably assist further sketching out the sound and there's even a neat pop vocal track featuring singer Hannah Curtis. DiMaio makes the most of his stock PRS Custom 22 guitar- which was used throughout the making of the CD along with a Fender Strat with Seymour Duncan mini humbuckers. DiMaio cites Jeff Beck and Eric Johnson among his influences and the eclectic nature of the ten track Deepin the Mystery will be of interest for anyone interested in high quality, cutting edge fusion guitar sounds.
