Album Notes

Majestic Alt. Country duo Dirtbird hail from Castlemaine, Australia. They combine lush harmonies with a sparse acoustic guitar and soaring cello. The dark, visionary songs they conjure from the ether are slightly unsettling and truly unique: Dirtbird songs are usually written by cutting and pasting old magazines and encyclopedias, painstakingly, deep into the night. Influences range from Neil Young to Low and Gillian Welch, but their ethereal warmth and sheer otherworldliness is all their own.

Dirtbird has been playing since 2002, and has shared the stage with bands such as The Mammals, Machine Translations, Epicure, Sime Nugent, Claire Bowditch and The Yearlings. They have played in pubs, folk clubs, music halls and festivals (including the Yackandandah Folk Festival, Castlemaine Acoustic Music Festival, Newstead Live and the Guildford Blues and Roots Explosion) all over Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and the A.C.T.

The Dirtbird sound combines the \"whisper-to-a-roar\" vocals and understated guitar work of songwriter David M. Lewis (long-standing member of Adelaide acoustic band The Bedridden) with the assured, countrified vocals of Victoria Moss. On record, they fill out their sound with cello, double bass, dobro and banjo.

Dirtbird have been played on radio stations around the world, notably in Australia, Belgium, Holland and the U.S., and they have a song on the current Acoustika vol.11 compilation put out by 272 records in California.

Dirtbird\'s most recent two albums, Cathedral and White Horse Road, were recorded with producer / engineer Richard Pleasance at his studio in elevated plains, Vic.

Some quotes about Dirtbird:

\"A great rainy day soundtrack...a record for sipping early morning coffee and being introspective before the world comes crashing in...music that is stripped down to its skeletal remains, yet holds the attention from start to finish\" - Randy Baker, East Bank Radio, Nashville.

\"Haunting music from another world, another time. It makes me dream when I am awake.\" - Robyn Chalklen (The Yearlings).

\"Gorgeously smooth...honest and ragged...deserves many a considered listen.\" - Steve Jones, dB magazine, Adelaide.
