Album Notes

Divining Rods are the latest project of Chris Newman, former Singer, Songwriter, and guitarist of Napalm Beach and SnowBud and the Flower People. Newman dominated the Northwest scene beginning in 1980, with former Wipers Drummer, Sam Henry. Napalm Beach went on to tour Europe several times. They were present when the Berlin Wall came down and played Yugoslavia, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, England.

Chris Newman has always put his entire heart and soul into his writing, singing, and playing. He is heralded as one of Portlands finest Guitar Players and prolific writers.

He is joined by Dave Dillinger of Napalm Beach on Bass, and Louie Samora, Jackals/Flapjacks(singer and Guitar) on Drums. Psychedelic Keyboards are provided by Roach (Fireballs of Freedom / Starantula). Newmans lyrics are penned from real life experience and hardluck storys. You won't be disappointed. This is the real stuff.

An ass kicker collection of songs

Hard rockers, love ballads, swing tunes, psycho-freak outs. That's what's on this CD. And, of course, stunning guitar work from Chris Newman - and equally stunning work from everyone involved. If you like variety in your music - and righteous music with balls mixed with grace - this one's for you. From the galloping "Jeffrey Lee" to the almost brutally introspective "Millions of Tiny Pieces" to the Hendrix-esque "Love Letter to the Dead," the band slides between musical genres easily. They're pros - and it shows. By the way, some of these guys are ex-Napalm Beach and Snow Bud, just to give you a reference point. And, as a matter of disclosure, my son and I helped put this thing together. But I wouldn't have lifted a finger if it wasn't as good as I said it was. You need to have this CD.

I have followed Chris Newman's projects since I discovered him in 1985. He's had a life like a roller coaster, and this disc is by far one of his very best. Every song is real, true, and from the heart. No cliches, no gimmicks, no tricks.
