Dusty Groove Liner Notes...

It’s been a long time coming for DJ Inc – and looking back, it seems like nearly a decade since we’ve been digging his grooves.

Way back in the 90s, the possibility of work like this coming from Chicago was almost unimaginable. The city had a great steppers scene, but it was often locked into more mechanical rhythms and stiffer, more electric instrumentation – often too programmed to be soulful enough to appeal to our ears, and sometimes drowning in the space between mainstream R&B and some of the weaker imports that were hitting these shores as the initial wave of Acid Jazz from London was dying down.

Enter DJ Inc, who sprung to the rescue with homegrown tracks that offered up the real sound that made the Windy City groove in the small hours – mellower jams than the house rhythms that Chicago was still strongly known for, and often filled with a nice dose of jazz that kept things interesting over the beats. The initial DJ Inc sound was a bit cold at times, but as years moved on he has really deepened Tha Afterset style – bringing in more acoustic saxophone to top off the keys and beats – and hitting just the right mix to evoke the sound of the steppers at their best.

This album’s easily the strongest DJ Inc effort to date, and has a simple, subtle quality that we really appreciate – one that doesn’t hit you over the head, and just kind of sneaks in under the door with a warmly soulful glow.

So, after all these years, and hearing a record like this, we’re left with one real question: Will Tha Afterset move to the main event? Sounds like they’re plenty ready by now!

“I find to be necessity controlling positive destiny…” so goes the rhythmic intro to THE AFTERSET: SELECT MUSIC PROGRAMMING. DJ I.N.C. delivers up music for the people concentrating on the feel and vibe not just the genre. This recording is cool and sexy first, followed by jazzy and soulful with elements of Hip Hop, funk and chill. This very satisfying album is graced by some of the finest musicians in the world including bassist/songwriter Marzuq Asanti, saxophonist/singer Marqueal Jordan, trumpeter Kafele, guitarist Phil Seed and percussionist Joe Rendon. The concept DJ I.N.C. puts into play on this project is the premise that like jazz and soul, Hip Hop is timeless, and the evolution of the sound is what is commonly referred to as Acid Jazz… a rich tapestry of musical styles. There’s no doubt that music fans will whole-heartedly embrace this deep and artful offering of sexy and smooth Nu Jazz from one of the most progressive and trend-setting musical talents to come along!

Sweet Stepping Grooves from Chicago...

Sweetly stepping grooves from the Chicago scene -- one of the greatest albums to come from the Windy City in a while, and easily the best so far from DJ Inc! The group have a mellow bottom groove that's totally great -- spare beats and basslines that never lapse into the too-slick, or cloying modes of other steppers records -- and over the top is a nicely maturing jazz sensibility, one that features strong solos on sax and trumpet, plus a bit of soulful vocals! The whole thing has a laidback groove that's totally great, and every bit the perfect summation of the groove the Chicago scene has been trying for for years, but never reached this well before. Titles include "Bubbs Lounge", "Beautiful Point", "Grown & Sexy", "Is It Tight", "Serve Chilled", "Select Music Programming", and "Late Night Drive".
