Album Notes

COMPASSION is the world-premiere CD featuring a
Special Message from His Holiness the XIVth Dalai Lama.
A “sonic-journey” modeled on Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’, COMPASSION is the brainchild of renowned cellist & electric-cellist Michael Fitzpatrick. COMPASSION is the first musical collaboration/recording in history to fuse the ancient chant traditions of East and West. COMPASSION, which involved Tibet’s Drepung Loseling Monks, world-renowned for their multiphonic chant, the Abbey of Gethsemani Schola, revered for its Gregorian chant, and Millenia Music’s soaring instrumentalists, was recorded and filmed inside the largest cave in the world, Mammoth Cave, as well as at the famous monastery the Abbey of Gethsemani, and at the Furnace Mountain Zen Temple. COMPASSION was recommended for a Special Merit Award at the Grammy Awards, prompting EMI Jazz & Classics CEO & President Bruce Lundvall to state: “COMPASSION is at once both a prayer and an aural celebration of brotherhood and world peace. It has the power to bring feelings of hope and human compassion to all who listen.” www.michaelfitzpatrick.com

I was given this CD as an Easter present some years ago. After a busy day, I put it on. I listened and found myself in an amazing place, a new place and just wanted to stay there. Later, I realized I had witnessed not only incredible musicianship, but the absolute truth of another human being which was not only powerful, but incredibly intimate. Like all truth encounters, I was not only lifted, but motivated to find and share my own truth. This is art at it's best, it's fullest.

A friend gave me this CD several years as an Easter present. When the day finally got quiet, I put it on and listened. Ihad never heard music like this before and just let it spill all over me.Hours went by.It wasn;t just the incredible musicianship that spoke to me.It was the incredible experience of experiencing someone's truth. The intimacy of it changed me and made me want to find and express my own.It was a holy moment. It does what art should do-it raises you up.

I had the pleasure and honor of participating in a webcast of Michael Fitzpatrick playing solo cello in the chapel at St John the Divine a few years ago. He is not only a brilliant cellist, eliciting the soul of compassion itself from his cello, but is an inspiration as a human being. This album exemplifies those qualities. It is, as the Baghavad Gita suggests a "truth" to which you are lifted and which you will always remember. I bought 3.
