Album Notes

dan mackenzie is a singer/songwriter/composer/producer/writer/actor (and overall dilettante) who, hailing originally from New York, has been living in Los Angeles for the past decade. besides producing his own new tunes and playing gigs locally, mackenzie also writes and produces songs for a few other indie artists and occasionally creates soundtracks for film and television.

dan plays many of the instruments on his records (acoustic and electric guitars, wurlizter electric piano, electronic keyboards, clarinet, bass guitar and harmonica, to name a few) but is always eager to enlist the talents of a guest cellist, drummer or trumpeteer when he wants to reach beyond the limits of his own musical abilities.

mackenzie lived in Europe for six years when he was growing up, went to high school in suburban New York and then got a bachelor's degree in music from Brown University. although he has never been signed to a record label of any sort, dan is now beginning to look around for a "deal" of some sort while continuing to produce and distribute his recordings independently.

mackenzie is currently working on a quick follow-up to the presently available "good things" - a new EP written and produced in what he calls "a more organic, intimate and eclectic" style. the as yet untitled work will be available at this website in late March.

Dan Mackenzie is a great singer and song writer expecially on the Twister Sisters when he is a guest and thinking of a song and at the end he sang it for the Twister Sister, "Force of Nature" is the name of the song he played for the Twister Sisters.

This CD is amazing and shows all the brilliance that develops over Mackenzie's subsequent releases. I am totally hooked. I highly recommend it - and take a slow stroll through all of his releases. They are filled with insight and depth wrapped up in pop hooks. Super fun.

this album has a little more slickness and a lot more funk than dan's debut album, "shakytown," but it's still meticulous work and still very, very good. dan's voice gets better and better with every album, but make no mistake about it -- his forte is still songwriting. the lyrics on this album are keen and crisp, from the driving, ambitious "econocar" to the sentimental, but adorable "black cadillac" to the oddly endearing "something good" (a song about liking the way a girl's eyes look when they are "framed by optimetric steel"). the only issue i have is that this record lacks a coherent theme. could we conclude from the title, "good things," that dan has reached inner peace? or at least relationship nirvana. on "shakytown," he sounded puppydog-heartbroken on every other song, and there was a certain appeal to that. something about him music makes a girl want to pick him up, dust him off a little, and ask him out on a nice, old-fashioned date. if you can manage it, email dan through this site and try to get a copy of "shakytown" while you still can.
