Born in Harrogate, England, Deborah Hurwitz began her career as a concert pianist, performing solo for audiences of 3,000 at seven years of age. She started writing her own music at twelve and fell in love with pop songwriting, vocal and orchestral arranging and electronic music production as her prodigious talents developed across the Atlantic. After spending the next few years honing her writing, producing and performing skills, she moved to New York and began working with an array of artists, including Sinead O'Connor, Gloria Estefan and even the Muppets on Sesame Street's Elmopalooza!, which won a Grammy for Best Children's Album.
After four months and sixty cities with Cyndi Lauper on Cher's "Believe" tour, Deborah returned New York and released her solo debut, "Nice Girls Do," as new artist Deborah Marlowe. She had become addicted to vinyl pants and 20,000 screaming fans, and began traveling in search of ever-expanding opportunities to create and perform. After donning full body paint and conducting a 600-person nude opera at Nevada’s Burning Man Festival in 2000, she was inspired to take up a second residence and studio on the left coast. Assiduously avoiding east coast winters at her Playa del Rey studio, she has since created full-length concept albums and/or live workshop productions of Funny Business, a show about stand-up comics, One Day in America, a collection of stories told through dance to updated classic rock tunes, and Sheba, a biblical epic built on gospel funk and Middle Eastern disco.
In her spare time, Deborah has also enjoyed a flourishing career on Broadway. She originated her onstage role in the Broadway hit musical Jersey Boys, which won the 2006 Tony for Best Musical and the 2007 Grammy for Best Cast Album. She also serves as the Music Technical Designer and Synth Programmer for all Jersey Boys companies worldwide, including both National U.S. Tours and resident companies in Chicago, Las Vegas, London, Toronto and Australia. She made her Broadway conducting debut with Miss Saigon, played keyboards for Jekyll and Hyde and The Who's Tommy and toured with the First National companies of Mamma Mia!, Miss Saigon and Aspects of Love. As part of these hit productions, she has appeared on The Tonight Show, The Late Show with David Letterman, E! Entertainment Television, the 2006 Tony Awards, half a dozen national morning shows, and twice at The White House.
In 2007, Deborah signed a new publishing administration deal with six-time Grammy winner and best-selling author Jay Warner, and released her second solo CD “Naked Wire.” The album’s first single, “Mirror,” reached #25 on the Billboard Hot Singles Sales charts and she was featured on CNN Radio and Voice of America as an emerging voice in contemporary music.
Deborah Hurwitz' music is instantly engaging.
