Album Notes

"Mandatory Purchase!"

Rootsville.be
July 2009

“David Massey manages, with his storytelling, to blow away celebrities such as John Prine, James McMurtry, Todd Snider and others that have preceded him.”

Rootstime
October 2004

“You like your Country with a bluegrass filter? You like banjo pickin’ in the background, a singer with a likeably gentle voice, songs that tell stories and keep you interested until the last bar? Welcome to David Massey territory. Massey has been compared to the likes of Lucinda Williams, John Prine, Steve Forbert and Todd Snider, but he really has a strong enough identity to stand up for himself.”

Comes With A Smile
November-December 2004

David Massey writes and sings tunes melding folk, country, and rock influences into an Americana blend that led Rootstime to call his 2004 debut album - Blissful State of Blue - a masterpiece. Massey’s new release, So Many Roads, rocks a little harder than BSB, but includes a number of country, blues and bluegrass-influenced originals along with the rockers and several haunting ballads. Like Blissful State of Blue, the album features a basic band consisting of Jason Byrd, Zan McLeod, Jim Robeson, Robbie Magruder and Antoine Sanfuentes, all long-time staples on the Washington DC music scene who support Massey in his live appearances. A host of other DC musicians contribute to the record, including Emily and Susan Hsu of the indie pop/jam band Exit Clov, Bill Starks of The Cathy Ponton King Band and Ruthie and the Wranglers, and Dudley Connell of the Seldom Scene.
