Clarence Dobbins "The Soul Of A Man" (Reach Hi)
Former U.S. Marine Dobbins has been thrilling audiences back home in Nashville for years with his husky soul voice and musical melange of soul, blues & R & B. But it's time those Nashvillians share this talented singer with the rest of the world! The set opens with two hard hitting urban blues numbers. The first, the Dobbins-penned "Matter Of Time", is replete with jingle janglin' guitar and horn blasts while the live "Rock Me Baby" grinds it's way into your gut. Listed up next is the classic "Drown In My Own Tears". Now a singer is dauntless to cover a song associated with the late Ray Charles. Oh, and a singer also needs the appropriate amount of soul to dare try. Well, Dobbins proves he's sho 'nuff qualified with a earnest delivery that even captures some of that pinched emotion Ray was the king of. Equally impressive is his take on "I Wish It Would Rain" where he proudly displays his debt to David Ruffin. It's to Dobbins' credit that his four originals fit nicely alongside these instantly familar chestnuts. Along with the aforementioned "A Matter Of Time", his "You Don't Know" and "It's Not Over" are convincing country soul songs with fantastic singing, playing (real musicans real instruments) and production (by Dobbins). Meanwhile "Sign Your Name" is a brooding, slow blues reminiscent of "Walking The Backstreets And Crying". Simply a must have CD for fans of Soul Blues & Deep Soul. It's only a "Matter Of Time" before some major label scoops this guy up. Visit http://cdbaby.com/cd/dobbins to discover him before your neighbor does.
