Texas-style contest fiddling is best described as a fusion between traditional old-time fiddling and early jazz. The style emerged during the 1920s and 1930s, when Texas fiddlers took it upon themselves to "improve" the tunes they heard at dance halls, on the radio, and on 78-rpm records. Frequently, towns would hold contests where fiddlers would come from miles away to flaunt their talents, compete for prizes, and jam until sunrise. Once the festivities were over, fiddlers would return home to practice in their woodsheds, kitchens, and living rooms until the next contest came around. The Doc Wallace Trio takes this rollicking music out of the tin-roofed pavilions and rodeo grandstands of Texas and gives it new life with imaginative improvisations and a jazzy New York attitude. As a fiddler, David "Doc" Wallace (violin) has been broadcast on NPR, ABC and CBS television, WQXR radio's McGraw-Hill Young Artist's Showcase, and the soundtrack for the PBS television mini-series Frontier House. He has fiddled throughout the United States and has won prizes in major fiddle contests, including the World Championship Fiddlers Festival and the Texas State Championship Fiddlers' Frolics. Equally acclaimed as a classical musician, David has performed and toured for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the New York Viola Society, and numerous music festivals, including the Taos Chamber Music Festival, the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival, SONIC BOOM!, Bowdoin, and MOMA's Summer Garden. David received his Doctor of Musical Arts from the Juilliard School, where his dissertation on Texas-style fiddling received the Richard French Prize, and where he now serves on the graduate studies faculty. Dana Scofidio (electric guitar) has performed extensively with jazz, rock, country, and rhythm-and-blues bands throughout the northeast, the Caribbean, and Canada. In concert, he has been featured with diverse artists, including Bo Diddley and children's composer John Farrell. Dana's prodigious recorded output includes CDs, videos, and music for a Nickelodeon television series. He attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Daniel Levy (acoustic guitar) Emerging film composer and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Levy has performed jazz, rock, and folk music throughout the country. A graduate of the music composition program at Miami University, he moved to New York in 1986, and has since composed music for over 40 theatrical productions. His opera THE SINGING (with playwright Lenora Champagne) won a 1999 Richard Rodgers Award. Daniel's work has received support from the Richard Rodgers Foundation, Loewe Foundation, Harburg Foundation, Jerome Foundation, New D

This CD showcases David Wallace's versitility, sentitivty, and world-class musicianmanship. His Texas waltzes are as moving as a Puccini aira. Besides all that, he's a really nice guy! Larry Belew, music educator, actor, playwright
