notes

This is a compilation CD gleaned from two of Don Lange's Flying Fish Records recordings, “Natural Born Heathen” and “Don Lange—Live!” It contains the widely sung classics, “Here’s To You Rounders” and “Take The Children and Run.” Lange is an award winning songwriter whose work Rolling Stone Magazine called, “powerful original material!” The songs range from intensely personal and poetic to powerful political statements, all honed by a poetic sensibility. In addition to some of Lange's finest songwriting this album contains an all-star cast--Howard Levy, Red Grammer, Ken Bloom, Jeff Dowd--and was engineered by Fred Breitberg who did many of Curtis Mayfield's records.

  • This 'River' Runs Clean & Strong
    author: Peter Robinson

Many of us had given up having copies of these compositions ever again. The old LP versions were honored but it felt as if we were more or less faced with their being lost, or technologically irretrievable. Then came this CD and a clean, strong river flows once more. It is a long-needed irrigation, and the gods must be thanked. Don Lange and the incredible musicians on these recordings have renewed my relationship with some of the sadly over-looked but outstanding compositions in folk music. There's not really a misstep in the entire collection, but "Santa Barbara" is a masterstroke. When you blend the poetry of a heart-felt composition with all-star musical talent, you run a high risk of spectacular compositions. "Santa Barbara" is one such. "Here To You Rounders" offers a snapshot of a time in the country when men and women did the best they could against forces they could not control. Someone has to be the archivist for the emotions of that difficult time and impossible circumstances, and luckily we have Don Lange for the larger mosaic. A sure-footed big-picture mind with the spirit to sweat the selection of the perfect day-by-day detail -- it's hard to ask for any more in any form of art and folk music is privileged to have someone of Lange's caliber in charge of this work. This is music that deserves to survive. CDBaby deepens the channel by offering this re-release. If you have friends who really care about folk music, this collection should be considered as their next birthday present. And one last note on "Heart of Darkness, Heart of Light." I consider it an adult lullabye. It's a private pespective -- an intimate sadness equisitely rendered on one hand and at the same time, it's an anthem for the whole world at all times for anyone who ever experienced loss. The first time I heard it many years ago it stopped me in my tracks. There are very few perfect works of art. This is one of them.
