notes

Adam Donmoyer is an unconventional and unpredictable artist who combines an ear for melody with a pop culture sensibility that celebrates the absurd. His training as a stage performer has helped him craft a piano-driven, modern-day pop cabaret act that has won over audiences of all types, not to mention critical acclaim.
The subject matter of his story songs runs the gamut from transvestites and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" to his pets and a one-night stand. They usually include an O'Henry twist that keeps listeners and audiences guessing even as they wipe tears of laughter (in the cast of the one-night stand, the lover turns out to be a werewolf). "Similarities to Tom Lehrer and Randy Newman come to mind when I listen to Adam's music. His approach is warped and wonderful and he is not afraid to be unique and himself," said Wilory Records recording artist Terri Hendrix after working with him at the Old No. 9 Music Series Songwriters Workshop this summer. Adam attended the respected workshop on scholarship after winning the grand prize of the Austin Songwriters Group 2001 Bare Bones Contest with sometimes co-writer Anders Rasmussen.
Through the satire, Adam's songs have been honored for their serious undertones. A song inspired by a schizophrenic cousin who believes himself to be Jesus Christ recently contributed to his nomination for the Humbie Heart Award from the Humble Time "Songwriters' Radio Showcase." A favorite at Humble Time, Adam often leaves people laughing so hard, they cry. He calls his music "tragically funny."
"Adam's like a car accident: you walk by, and you can't take your eyes off of him," says producer David Love of Love Monkey Studio.
"He's a wild man," agrees songwriter Jason Blume, who has penned multiple hits.
Adam's sensitivity to the spectrum of human feeling, interpreted with and tempered by humor, has acquired attention on MP3.com, where he was highlighted as an "Artist Success Story." His successful MP3 site and featured songs on various internet sites and radio shows have added to his international following.
Adam is most enchanting on stage, where he forges an instant bond with even the largest of audiences. His new album just came out. He hopes the album will be an opportunity for new listeners and devoted fans alike to hear at home what they fall in love with when they see him on stage.

  • You have to have this CD!

You have to have this CD! Most Amaizing Smile is just plain eerie and if your butt is still attached to your body after you hear TV Hell you need to get your funny bone lubed. Adam is a great songwriter and even better pianist.

  • Unpredictable, observative and irronical, sort of Brechtian

I had the chance of knowing Adam during a summer theater season at Otterbein, working on a mistery show. Then, he gave me his first cd which added a touch of unique sensibility to the image I had on him as an artist. Unpredictable, observative and irronical, sort of Brechtian - both in music and theater. Hope to get in touch again

  • An amazing collection of songs from a great writer.

Okay, it's not that easy to make me laugh. Smile, yes, but those deep down, make-me-live-two-more days-longer kind of laughs just don't grace me that often. And from a folk singer? Aren't folksingers supposed to make you tear or jeer? And aren't they supposed to play the guitar, for heaven's sake? Adam Donmoyer's Naughty Bits is an amazing collection of songs from a great writer. I call him a folk singer because he does what the great folk writers do - he manages to sing bits of real, honest human experience otherwise untouched by popular song. Granted, some of the human experiences are a little way out. But just because I haven't been gender surprised on a date (Amanda), haven't stalked my object of affection (I'm Not Psycho), turned into a werewolf (Most Amazing Smile), or been subjugated by my cat (Rugby the Cat) doesn't mean I haven't been amazed, amused, confused, and bedazzled by life. As I am by this album. Adam's colorful, practically poetic (he ain't no peasant) piano accompaniment graces the album throughout - foundation to solid, diverse production values that allow the listener to enjoy each song like the gem it is. Naughty Bits is an excellent first album by a most orignal writer. I leant mine to my son (just graduated from high school ) and his girlfriend. They memorized all the songs but still won't give it back... time to get another copy of Naughty Bits.

  • There's no one else like Adam Donmoyer. Hilarious, poignant, icky, sublime...all

There's no one else like Adam Donmoyer. Hilarious, poignant, icky, sublime...all at once! Adam could be writing for Broadway, and his songs certainly have a theatrical underpinning. But they manage to be hip and edgy at the same time. Brilliant writing, great vocals and good production balance somewhat uneven instrumentals. All-in-all, a powerful first effort. I can't wait for his next record. Buy this CD (you can always give it to your weird friend if it isn't your cup of tea)!

  • Some amazing stuff, needs some editing.

Adam Donmoyer's new CD, Naughty Bits, is something of a treasure. Adam's songs are primarily known for their humor, but expect any Adam Sandler crap. These songs are (mostly) very sophisticated pop songs and have real melodies, carefully crafted piano-driven arrangements, and serious undertones. You may laugh at first, but listen twice, and you will hear some real depth. This album contains two weaknesses, however. The first is that Adam chose to use his digital piano to record this album, probably because it's expensive to record in a studio that has a real piano. For me, there's just no substitute for the real thing. The second is that there seems to be some superfluous material here. About 3 or 4 songs simply lack the Adam Donmoyer pop genius that I love so much, and they dilute the album's overall greatness. Since the album contains 14 cuts, I think he could have afforded to leave of some of the weaker stuff. Check out Adam's biggest mistake, "Arvin's Song" to see what I'm talking about. This album is totally worth buying, but this artist is capable of so much more.
