Album Notes

Alabama native Donna Hopkins began her musical career at the age of 14 and has never looked back. Her musical history is deeply rooted in gospel, blues, and bluegrass. "My mother was a singer and my grandfather was a preacher with a haunting and powerful singing voice," says Hopkins. "It was really like blues to me."
Carrying on this musical legacy, she has taken it to a new level, playing lead, rhythm, and slide guitar. She currently tours with the Donna Hopkins Band, playing original material as well as unique arrangements of classic blues and rock. Her trademark vocal style has been compared to such classic voices as Janis Joplin and Bonnie Raitt. "Growing up 45 minutes from Muscle Shoals, where some of the most important American music was produced, has been a huge influence on me," she says.

Hopkins released her debut album Free to Go in March, 2003. From Alabama/country/rhythm & blues to gospel to mystical slide/conga/percussions, this CD is authentic Southern roots music - from a woman's point of view. What you hear is what you get live. The Donna Hopkins Band is Donna on lead guitar and vocals, Cindy Adler on bass guitar, Kevin Thomas on Hammond B3 and Wurlitzer, and Richie Jones on drums and percussion.

Most of us 'Atlantans' have been awestruck by this petite womans delivery, but it may be time the girls on the planet also pay closer attention. Donna really 'puts out' with her delivery and showing true 'heartbreak Southern/Northern style'. No need to turn on your GPS, with every track you will have a real sense of 'time and place'.
