Album Notes

In 2006 a historic work Shi Jing Ancient Book of Songs, was released to the world. From the Ancient past of China came the songs and poetry over 4,000 years old. This masterful Shi Jing text then inspired the exotic music created by the pioneering musician: Donohoe.
This album weaves the songs together like the chapters of a book. Each song takes on the characteristics of the Shi Jing poem from which inspired it. To fully enjoy the music it should be played from beginning to end, from cover to artful cover. Instruments like the Chinese Pipa and the Erhu are matched with synthesizers, electric bass, drum set, vocals, and more. You can hear the voices of an ancient people sing with a modern sound.

Colin O’Donohoe
His work has already been heard in such marvelous places as the Carnegie Music Hall, and his clear artistic vision lead to the creation of a celebrated Asian orchestra in the US: New Moon Orchestra for which he was the conductor.
After working with this group his intense interest in Asian music and philosophy lead him to the recording of his debut solo album Shi Jing Ancient Book of Songs.

This poetry is very old. It was nice to see that Donohoe used the traditioal Mandarin and not our more modern Chinese. It definitely gives it a more authentic sound when the woman speaks in a more traditional way. I haven't seen too many americans interested in this kind of stuff. I'm really glad to see this group perform such old poetry in such a new way. I didn't love every song on the album, but I think it was all very cool and well done. If you are interested in this music, you should check out the real text to see all of the poems. Very cool project
