Album Notes

El Mosquito in My Kitchen is a bilingual recording for:
People who speak English and/ or Spanish
Elementary school teachers & librarians
Elementary & pre-school age people
Parent, grandparents, great grandparents,
People who would like to learn more Spanish/English
People who speak several styles of song

To create El Mosquito, I collected manuscripts of several hundred Mexican and Latin American folksongs. After reading through the music, I selected ten pieces based on their melody and rhythmic structure, then wrote new verses in Spanish and pared the list down to six songs.

I completed the project with English language songs composed by my friends and me.

Use this recording to
Have a good time
Lead children in musical movement
Take a nap
Travel a path inside yourself
Experience the mystery of song
Remember when your children were young
Bake chocolate chip cookies

Bio:
Don has been performing since appearing at age 5 as the Littlest Angel in an elementary school pageant.

He began his professional career as a singer songwriter and recorded half a dozen LP’s. Later, he turned to acting and translating plays and then to storytelling and one man shows. Currently he travels the Southwest performing his song and story shows for schools, theaters and festivals.

Sanders’ Latin American repertoire draws on Mexican and Tejano folkloric roots and includes stories of coyotes, mosquitoes and haunted trucks.
Don’s great-great grandmother was born in southern Spain, married a Scottish sailor and settled in Florida. Her son,

Don’s great grandfather Alex McDonald, came to Texas, cowboyed, roped a bear, and worked as a Harris County Deputy Sheriff.

Sanders is a member of the honorary board of directors of the Kerrville Folk Festival and is on the Texas Commission on the Arts Touring Artist Roster.
He received a Master’s in Spanish Literature from the University of Houston and has studied in Mexico, Guatemala and Spain.

Born in Houston, Don lives near the center of town, in an old wooden house with his wife and his 16-year-old son.

Great songs

I've only listened only to the cuts available on the website, but will buy for my grandson. I remember Don from the Sand Mountain days. Worked in the kitchen for part of a summer, used to read Mao's little red book while listening to Don. Abandoned the red book, but kept one of Don's earlies albums. Its a long way from cockroaches to mosquitos. Nice to see Kemo is still around too.

Quality music for families

Don has put together a great collection that will appeal to families that enjoy genuine, Texas music by a genuine Texas treasure. Don's been a role model and friend to me and countless other musicians for a long old time. His gentle, amiable manner shines through on these songs as does his uncompromising musicianship and production. Blending his rock-solid songwriting and creative interpretations of existing songs, this project reminds me of the classic family recordings of the 70's & 80's. The songs have a live feel (refreshing) and it's good to hear some great traditional songs on a family record. Great work, Don! Thanks for giving us this wonderful CD!

a toe-tapper and shoulder-roller.

Sanders’ new mixed lingual CD for children, families, and educators is a toe-tapper and shoulder-roller..... The accompanying booklet enables parents to learn the words better to sing along. The six Spanish lyrics are there interpreted. Evidently by my experience, Cowboy Don’s work also is excellent song and music to listen to while preparing supper
