Sit-up-and-take-notice-good!

Pop hooks and sing-along choruses sweeten mostly dark lyrics about life, love and death. Driving electric guitar, memorably from guest player Scott Weddle (of the Flatirons and Amelia) is front and center, set over a solid rhythmic roadbed of acoustic guitars.
Kickoff track "Sweet & Pure" is shades of vintage 10,000 Maniacs, with an interplay of vocal harmonies between Kaineg and guitarist Maria Callahan (Doris Daze) a killer combination. The Natalie Merchant vibe resurfaces in "Sink or Swim" as Kaineg's crystalline voice soars over an insistent guitar refrain. Harmonies reminiscent of early Indigo Girls are a highlight.
Kaineg's heart-on-sleeve lyrics in "Scar," the EP's centerpiece, may be about someone or something in particular. But her confessional on emotional isolation speaks to us all, a mark of good craft in songwriting.
Otherwise, competent playing and production echo throughout the recording -- the reverb-soaked punctuation in the minor-key "Ophelia," the wailing slide guitar in the time-shifting "Let Go" being particularly nice touches.
Although the record travels familiar territory, it's well done and literate. At only six songs it ends too soon. One listen and you'll find yourself humming these songs later. Blame Jamie Kaineg. And hope to hear more from Doris Dodge.
