Album Notes

For Dori Turner's long-awaited second album, she continues to create memorable melodies with her unmistakable blend of Americana and modern folk. Her complex fingerpicking style is complemented by her rich, soothing voice. She has recently received awards for the songs on this album. She was recognized as a finalist for “Cry Yourself to Sleep” in VH1's Song of the Year contest as well as receiving an honorable mention for “Welcome Her Home” in the Great American Songwriter contest.

Dori began work on writing this album in 2002. She found herself writing a series of songs that had a reoccurring theme. Many of the songs deal with different kinds of grief or harship and the ways people pull themselves out of it. By late 2004, she had finished writing the album and set about to record in March of 2005.

Like her first album, “Songbook,” Dori performed all the songs live with only her voice and guitar accompaniment. She has found that to be best way she can capture the raw emotion of the song. Unlike her first album, the recording process didn't end there. A series of overdubs were recorded on top of her initial performances. These included acoustic percussion, bass, grand piano (recorded at the Conservatory of Music), mandolin and backup harmonies. After this effort, the songs became fuller and more realized. She finished recording in December of 2006, and the album was released the same month.

These songs were written to inspire people to rise above their seemingly insurmountable dilemmas and live to the fullest; to make their own luck instead of waiting around for it. We hope you enjoy the songs as much as we enjoyed making them.

REVIEWS

Tender coffee-house folk from the very talented San Franciscan Dori Turner.

Tender coffee-house folk from the very talented San Franciscan Dori Turner. She has an absolute lovely voice and her 6-string pickings bring to mind Joni Mitchell (but with a voice more like Sandy Denny).
