Album Notes

The inspiration for this project came as professional jazz musicians Mark Massey and Dorothy Collins struggled to find music which expressed their faith in the style they are most at home with: jazz. The result was the blending of the great hymns of the Christian Church with a spectrum of jazz styles including modern, traditional, fusion, Brazilian, R&B and gospel. The hymns range from popular classics such as Jesus Loves Me and Just a Closer Walk With Thee to the traditional classics like the Sibelius melody Be Still My Soul and J.S. Bach's reharmonization of O Sacred Head Now Wounded; spirituals with a latin groove, and a gregorian chant the leads right into the Coltrane tradition.

It swings, its funky, its straight-ahead. The musicianship is superlative, the arrangements brillliant, and the vocals are both earthy and angelic. This album redefines 'hymn' while at the same time pays homage to songs that have reverberated with love for God for hundreds of years.
