Doug Edgell's 13-track record, "Ghosts Inside My Memory", is a pop/rock collection that showcases Edgell's approachable vocal and a sweeping/modern AC production value from Don Maue. The title track pushes Edgell's falsetto at the top of the chorus with flavors that remind us of Richard Marx and Daniel Powter. One of the highlights of the record is "Block out the Sun" - the acoustic intro and harmonic progressive choices have a Beatles tinge, but moves into something a bit more modern and contemplative. There's a sad yet hopeful vibe that works well for the range Edgell shows in both his writing and vocals. The supportive strings are dramatic and emotional as he sings, 'love can be hard, it can get you down, don't let it spoil your fun. .don't let it block out the sun'. We hear influences from America's "tin man" to Steve Miller's "joker" in other tracks, rounding out the overall singer/songwriter pop sound that grew out of the 70's. Even so, the clear and clean modern production takes those influences and fine songwriting ability and brings them current. Edgell hits another fine note in "10,000 Angels", as we find him again in the form of 'sun' - acoustic guitar introduces his vocal bare and vulnerable which is where his strength resides. "For You" is another gem on the record and the dramatic production, again, is AC radio-ready. Edgell leaves us with the medium grooved, "Fool 4 Life", a tribute to living life as perfectly as possible - without cynicism and 'with my spirit free. 'a fool 4 life'. The optimistic and overall sweetness of the CD reveals the artist and he confirms his contentment with being that fool until he's done - leaving behind kind and thoughtful music. Well done.
Review from www.earbuzz.com - January 2008
Although his background is in classical guitar, Doug Edgell has chosen the path of singer-songwriter for his latest offering "Ghost Inside My Memory". Listening to Doug's songs is like meeting up with an old friend. There's a familiarity and comfortable feeling about them. His music is inspired and engaging, infused with genuine life experiences and observations, reflecting a journey of exploration and soul searching.
The music on "Ghost Inside My Memory" ranges from the hard driving "Another Day" with a retro 60's organ, to the hauntingly beautiful "Block out the Sun" with acoustic guitar and a string quartet. Layered textures of intricate guitars and piano, alluring lyrics and memorable melodies, his honest and accessible songs are both intimate and universally appealing.
Doug Edgell grew up in a small town southwest of Pittsburgh PA. He began guitar studies at the age 15 and by 18, he was teaching his first pupils. Doug then attended West Liberty State College where he earned a B.S. degree in classical guitar / business. After College, he formed the group Sleeping Giants which was a wildly successful regional touring act for 7 years. The group disbanded in 2000 but not before receiving national attention with their performance on NBC’s late night with Conan O’Brien show.
Doug has since started his own entertainment company DGEMusic, under which he released 3 CD’s of original music. (All available here at CDBaby!) The first “Nothing But Time” is a solo guitar fingerpicking CD showcasing Doug’s amazing guitar talent. Next was “For All Days”. This yielded his beautiful, heartfelt song “Juliet & Romeo” which has become a staple on hundreds of wedding mix CD’s. Doug’s latest CD “Ghost Inside My Memory” (2007) is the result of nearly 2 years of very hard work and dedication by Doug and producer Don Maue. “We were very determined to make music that was contemporary yet classic, and that would stand the test of time” They’ve done just that. The songwriting on “Ghost…” is contemporary yet the production has a classic quality to it. Intircate guitar lines, layered with piano textures, big hooks and memorable melodies, all set the stage for Doug's intimate, soul - searching lyrics.
