notes

"...a phenominal player, full of energy, creativity and passion, hard to believe he's only 18!" JOHN ABERCROMBIE

"When guitarist Doug Ratner gets fired up, smoke fills the room with clouds that help circulate the heat to every
corner. He pounces on every jazz and blues opportunity with emotions on overdrive." JAZZ IMPROV MAGAZINE

Doug Ratner began playing guitar at age 8. With music constantly surrounding his family, Doug was immersed in Rock n' Roll, Classical, and Blues from day one. Once entering High School, Doug began his journey into studying Jazz. Thanks from the help of his teacher, Mike Smith, Doug won the all-state Jazz guitar competition as a freshman! (Not bad for just a 14 year old) He began to make a name for himself amongst the local musicians. He was selected to perform in the Charles Mageed Greenley Jazz Ensemble, with legendary Jazz bassist Vishnu Wood. This sparked a friendship between the two, as musicians and as peers. Doug was again selected as the all-state Jazz guitarist his junior year, and also as the All Eastern Jazz Guitarist. Here he performed in Baltimore, MD alongside the best high school Jazz musicians from the east coast. Doug has headlined three sold-out shows at the Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton. He has performed at the Greater Connecticut Jazz Festival, The Hartford Jazz Festival, and countless of other gigs. Recently, he was selected as the guitarist, along with another student from PA, to be the guitarist for the Grammy Camp. He will be performing with some of the best musicians in the country, while they learn the business of the music from the help of Grammy Icons. Doug has had the help of his teacher Mike Smith, legends Joe Beck, Vishnu Wood, and Jack Wilkins. His influences include Wynton Kelly, Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis, Wes Montgomery, Jimmy Cobb, Dickey Betts, Duane Allman, Steve Hunter, and many more!

You simply would not know in a million years that Doug is only 18. He is a professional musician. He understands the importance of reliability, preparation, and the courtesy that is essential to a successful gig. Doug is a pleasure to work with, whether he is the star or backing up the star.

Doug has been teaching students of all levels and ages for four years. According to Kristin Deets, the director of youth at the Springfield Jewish Community Center, "Doug was able to motivate the students more than any other teacher we've ever had."

Classic burners, such as George Benson’s “The Cooker” and John Coltrane’s “Impressions,” give the guitarist all the inspiration he needs in order to light up the room. Ratner’s “No More” drives with a frenetic aura that propels his ensemble forward. Like Miles Davis’ classic “Milestones,” this one takes the band on an extended drive through countryside landscapes that lift the spirits high.

  • Great CD leaves listeners wanting more

Down the Line is a great selection of jazz music with just enough funk to get your toes tapping. I have CD's of Pat Metheny, John Scofield, and Larry Carlton and this CD belongs on the shelf right next to them. The interpretations of Supersition and Watchtower are special. Where is the next CD? We need more.!!!

This CD is what I like to call aggresively sophisticated. Melotic, jazzy, this cd really knows how to swing.
