Album Notes

Very rarely do you hear a piece and feel that it is something that is truly different, but that is exactly what you think the first time you hear Dragonspoon. Dragonspoon is the creation of Frank Aresti, former guitarist of Fates Warning. To generalize a bit, this release is best classified as industrial metal, but many tracks venture off into many directions, from verging on pure metal, to something you would hear at a rave, to dark, obscure pop, boundaries are not something that you will find here. Frank's guitar style is almost always evident, and fans of Fates Warning will find that Dragonspoon has definitely taken progressive metal into some uncharted waters. The guitar riffing, flowing leads, and the heavy guitar sound are definitely there for metal fans to enjoy.

Many tracks are heavier and have more of an edge than Fates Warning, and the vocal style is more straight-ahead and aggressive than Fates as well. What is most enjoyable about this release is perhaps that Frank has extended many genres in a new direction. He takes progressive metal into a more industrial direction, and brings the complexity of progressive metal into the industrial genre, which in the past could get a little redundant. As the CD progresses, it gets more and more obscure and dark, and the flow brings you from an energetic beginning, to a dark mysterious end, but keeps you absorbed throughout. Another surprising innovation is that the release is almost totally created by computer, with the only traditional elements being the guitars and vocals. But as you listen, this doesn't even come into your mind.

REVIEWS

great work
author: Stuart Allie
Really great solo effort. The music is engaging; the lyrics are thoughtful; and the production is excellent. The combination of electronica with live vocals and guitar works well. The guitar playing is excellently understated - just perfect for the songs, never over the top. The vocals have a harsh edginess to them that suits the material. This album doesn't fit neatly into one category (prog electronica?), and that in itself is an achievement today. Favourit tracks for me are "Snap!" and "Blade". Well done, look forward to hearing more.
