Album Notes

Jen Elliott was raised on traditional gospel in Jacksonville, Florida but she now calls New York City her home. In 2003, she signed with Manhattan indie record label City Canyons Records. A few short months later, they released her debut album, THE SECRET'S OUT. The album, backed by Jen's incredible band, Bluestruck, received Top 30 college, indie and international radio airplay and critical acclaim by the press in North America as well as the global media. Jen has been featured in issues of Entertainment Today, The Sun Herald, Inside Connection, and Keyboard Magazine. Jen and her songwriting partner, Bluestruck guitarist Anne Husick, were also recognized in 2004 by the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in their prestigious New Writers Showcase. To date, Jen Elliott and Bluestruck performed at the Black Potatoe Festival 2005, NY Auto Show 2005, GoGirls Elite Showcase 2004, A Day in the Park 2003, headlined at the Global Entertainment and & Media Summits 2003/2004. The band has also opened for the likes of Nils Lofgren, The Little River Band, and Nine Days. Her April 2006 tour and subsequent fall tour have or will take her to top venues throughout the mid-Atlantic states and the Northeast. Jen has also made in a name for herself in NYC by gigging regularly at venues such as The Red Lion, CBGBs Gallery, Arlene Grocery, The Village Underground, The Downtown, Crash Mansion, and The Sidewalk Cafe. Her soulful and hard-hitting new EP, THIS DAMN SONG, formally released by City Canyons on April 4, 2006 is an exciting prequel to a full length album, 8 DAYS DOWN, coming out in the fall of 2006.

Excellent EP but the full length 8 DAYS DOWN is even better.

While "This Damn Song" is really excellent, Jen Elliott's 8 DAYS DOWN includes all these great songs plus many more. 8 DAYS DOWN truly rocks!

Best album of the year!

Jen Elliott's "This Damn Song" is all in all a great blusey rock album. Right from the get go it will have you off your feet and stomping around like line dancing at a country bar but, the album can change like the weather and take you down another path, one more calm and mellow (like my favorite track "Bringing Me Down"). I like the dynamic elements this album provides, never knowing what the next track will bring always keeps you on your toes and wanting more. The only downfall to this album was that it was only 6 tracks long but, I probably wouldn't have been content even if it was a double disc featuring over 40 songs total! Definitely the best album I've heard so far this year, and hopefully Jen Elliott's follow-up releases will be just as amazing.

This is a hit!

"Jen Elliott rocks" declares the one sheet that came with this disc and indeed she does. Tough female rockers have had a long currency in the modern era and Elliott will soon be a Blues/Rock darling if this impressive 6-song EP "This Damn Song" is any indication. There's a lot of wannabe woman rockers (remember Shannon Curfman for example) but methinks Elliott's got that edge that'll make her standout. Her powerful alto voice and hip phrasing power the crunchy self-penned opener "Crazy"; which sports otherwise routine backing by her band Bluestruck. But the band nails the melodic "Full", which is ripe for college radio. Imagine a cooler version of Tori Amos without that self-indulgent bleating. But the standout cut is the driving "Bringing Me Down", featuring a Santana-inspired guitar line and a potent vocal by Elliott. For some reason I pictured Annie Lennox fronting a rock band when she delivers the refrain- it literally gave me a chill! Then there's that clever mandolin bridge to top it off. This is a hit. Overall, some of the songs on "This Damn Song" do come off a tad bombastic ("Garden Of Delight", "Try To Forget") but that's intentional- it's a style- like a modern version of Jefferson Airplane. Still, one wonders if they would fly in today's cynical and self-serious market. Ah who cares, I'll definitely see Jen and band in concert should they storm my area.
