Basscapes is a solo bass album where a world of sound is created using only basses(upright and fretless)along with some effects and looping. It is often considered an "Ambient" album. But,really much less so then my second CD "Mourning Guests Who Never Arrived.""Basscapes contains elements of Jazz and World Music.Metal guitar sounds are used and even a Canon.I wanted to create a CD where every song featured something I hadn't heard done on a bass before;"Heavens Castles" features and upright bass being bowed that is often compared to Hendrix or Black Sabbeth,"Crystal Dimension" has layers of looped effects fading into eternity, and the fretless choir in "Jaimila" has 18 overdubs."The Road to No-One" was a spontaneous composition made possable by looping effects and inspired by Ralph Towner.
The music on Basscapes has been on two different soundtracks and featured on television. It was warmly received by the major bass publications and had most of it's airplay on New Age stations.(Go Figure)
That is me on the cover, cleverly disguised as the missing love child of Fabio and Jaco Pastorious. The picture was actually taken by the niece of Rob Wasserman. And,It shows what my manager(at the time) thought he would have to do to sell a solo bass CD.
Over the years I have studied with Benny Reitvald,Kai Ekhardt and Mel Graves. Most recently I was deeply inpired at a seminar taught by one of my all time favorites David Friesen.I could name hundreds of musical influences so I'll just name the three most important ones and three you wouldn't expect.Jaco Pastorious,Scott La Faro,Jimi Hendrix,(Of course one could easily guese those)And,Nick Beggs(Kajagoogoo)Warren Haynes(Allman Bro.)and Pundit Pran Nath.Honerable mention goes to whoever played bass on Alice Coopers "Billion Dollar Babies" Album.

Interesting cd with much potential.

I really liked the cd overall. I'd have preferred it stay with music though. The overlying monologue (though only sparingly used) got in my way. I should, however, admit that when I want an instrumental album, I want all instrumental--just my preference. Overall, there's some really interesting composition and performance moments that make this CD a good buy--check it out.
