Album Notes

Drive formed in the Summer of 1997, began their incessant gigging by the following March, and earned a show at Portland's "North by Northwest" music conference by August.

By Halloween of 1998, they emerged victorious over 110 other bands to claim the championship of "Sonic Xplosion," a battle of the bands contest sponsored by KNRQ and The Rocket.

Fielding offers from several indie labels, Drive decided to use the Sonic Xplosion prize money to create their own label, Secret Decoder Records, and release their sparkling debut LP, Music For Interplanetary Travel.

Produced by Ezra Holbrook (recognized for his work on The American Girls' In the Whiskey Ya-Ya's and Lael Alderman's Slowdrag), the album is a chronicle of the band's experiences and ambition.

Acclaimed among the most innovative and spellbinding live bands on the Northwest art-pop scene, Drive's unique style puts together unpredictable melodies and lyrics.

Their harmonies and rhythms weave in and out of each other, but form cohesive and solid music.

The combination of their musical stylings and their onstage chemistry brought about a fan base that helped them win Sonic Xplosion and pack venues in Eugene and Portland.

Though the members parted company in the summer of 2000, Adam and Shane went on to The Bella Fayes (CDs available at CD Baby: http://www.cdbaby.com/bellafayes2 and cdbaby.com/bellafayes), and Pamela and Adam are currently playing in Charmparticles (cdbaby.com/charmparticles cdbaby.com/charmparticles2).

Why don't I make music this good?
author: April Shunn
I've played Drive's debut album non-stop for the past three weeks, recorded it onto an audio tape for cardiovascular inspiration, sang the tunes in the shower loud enough for the neighbors to hear, and hummed myself to sleep with "Lullaby." Yet every time I listen to Music For Interplanetary Travel, I discover something new: a newly audible chorus, string arrangement, harmony. Songs of love and betrayal never sounded so sweet. The vocal teamwork between singers/songwriters Adam Wayne and Pamela Rooney is charmingly complex, and allows the listener to completely immerse herself in the harmonies and singers' contrasting personalities. Yet Drive exists in a plane beyond singular musicianship. Skillfully backed by Shane Fisher on percussion and Tove Holmberg on violin, Drive delivers a beautifully mastered album that transcends a simple indie following.

The most amazing band ever.

Kick ass songs about life and the way things are. Sonically amazing, vocally stunning. The album is one of those that should be listened to from start to finish all at one time because it is a work of art. Buy it, you'll love it.
