This is it, the classic dr mastermind cd- featuring the songs written by McCourt(aka Dr Mastermind the evil genius) for what would have been the 3rd wild dogs lp... they were deemed TOO HEAVY for the Dogs direction at the time and rejected. as Matt was replaced by john tejeda Solo offer was made by the dogs former label shrapnel and this is the result.
marking the departure of drummer deen castronovo destined for higher ground with Tony Macalpine, marty Friedman and later Ozzy and currently Journey castronovo flails away with recless abanadon and this lp fieatured His first atomic fueld jazz inspired drum solo. On guitar a few notables were put in the mix and it was Kurt James who won the position and brought his amazing flair to the songs. ( Kurt is known as the man who rpelaced super stringsman Yngwie Malmsteen in the group Steeler he too does some remarkable things during his unaccompanined solo 9 utilizing reverse tape and actual chains and "various things " laying about the studio. the lp went to t he number one position in kerrang magazine;s import charts 3 months in a row in 1986 and contiues to be a favorite among the fans who admired matt's contribution to one of the fore runners of the American metal invasion of unsung guitar heroes.
the musi is fast and heart pumping with strong vocals and mccourts rhythimic bass thourgh( matt is a lifelong fan of Lemmy and Motorhead) as well as paying homage to the theatrical components of KISS and Alice Coooper in both visual and sonic appeal
also included on this disc is Live versions from the One night stand DVD incluing solos not heard in the studio and some other gems from various local gigs all taking place in the summer of 1987.
Unlike most of the records of this period this has the raw unabashed feel of a band playing their heart out and creating on -demand one of a kind perfomances over -rehearsed would ot be a true description many of the unusual drum riffs were ideas Matt Mouthed to deen on the song "control" fior example" try and make it sound as if the kcik drums are going backward" matt says to deen and does the pattern with his hand.. incredibly adept at translation Castronovo on first execution perfomed the part in one take.
the studio sessions were recorded in portland ( basic tracks with Ron Chick on rhythm gtr and mat on bass Deen on drums and then finished at the world reknown Prairie Sun facilities in cotati california where mat was put on spot to redo his bass parts with a bass outfitted with a new product EMG pickups... (and to prove he actually did play bass on the lp whcih was scrutiniized by producer Mike varney... and one take for each tune and BAM !.. "on a bass with a neck like a louisville slugger" as he described it.. "i prefer smaller slim necks of jazz bass or preferably a Rickenbacker - but atthe going rate of one of THOSE it had better come with 2 wheels and an engine!"

its a great cd for a great price..
ok ill agree with yaaall about the damn insert but hey with over 9 albums worth of material on the enhanced version for $5.00 there is the consolation! and a band with a one month history and one gig just doesnt have much to write about! let the music do the talking and for the price ill give it 5 stars

Un clásico de los 80
Me costó lo suyo encontrarlo en lp (disco de culto para mi) y ahora lo tengo en mis manos en cd y además con extras en directo!! Para ser 5 estrellas le faltaría una mejor presentación (letras, fotos...) pero no todo el mundo es perfecto. Dr Mastermind forever!!

Kurt James totally rules all over this CD.He is definately a true guitarist that has been overlooked in the rock world.He is by far a TOP GUN and needs to come back as a virtuoso,just like the best of them.

The quality of the recording is so-so but the content on this album really makes up for any shortcomings in that area.Deno is a monster.I had not heard this in almost 20 yrs when I was browsing and found it...Go cd baby...

i read the other reviews and decided to buy the cd despite what stormrider says and visited the band website, much to my surprise dr mastermind himself emailed me back! im very thankful that this rare piece of history is even available
my vinyl copy saw lots of replays and was in a mess.
ive tried to cop many of the guitar riffs Kurt James is fantastic dr mastermind said in an email that these were his contribution to the 3rd wild dogs album he is also the lead singer of that band. ill have to dissagree with with packaging woes of the previous reviewer front and back are just like my vinyl copy.
i was satisfied with the music! teh live cuts are a bit rough and unproduced but that is evidence that it was not tampered with as many so called live albums are, Matt McCourt -dr mastermind explained that his goal is to share all of the stuff most bands hide away.

I love the LP, I've had it in power rotation since '86. I've played it so many times you can hear the other side backwards. Now, a beef with the Doctor. In 1987 I sent $2 for a "merchandise catalog and poster" to from Dr. Mastermind's Outpatients. I never got it. Some stoner probably got a free pack of smokes with my $2!

Okay, making my ears bleed and then heisting my petty cash is pretty damn metal. Thanks Doc.

pretty enjoyable music / shitty "package"
The music on this CD is actuall pretty good, well written technical power metal based on the lead guitars. You can hear slight similarities to bands like Racer X, Cacophony or Vicious Rumors. Too bad the packaging & the Media is as weak. A burned CD-R with just a one page "booklet" is not good enough for an Album like this. I mean, a CD-R is something i'd expect (and accept) from a band that does release a demo nowadays. But in my opinion it's simply not acceptable to put out a reissue of a well known Album of a band that already has a name. So Music + 4 Stars / packaging -1 sums up to 3 stars at all.

my husband and i were looking online and found this incredible cd under the wild dogs whom we are fans of
we never knew about this album which was apparently released just after matt left the wild dogs This album is really fast speed metal with the odgs drummer deen wailing away.
we saw deen in journey last year and this is how we remember him there is even a drum solo right on the cd!
and matt plays bass! this is better than wild dogs mans best friend

i knew of this year's ago from the wild dog's...i'm a deen castronovo fanatic..this and reign of terror from the wild dog's is some of his best work..mastermind rock's if you like speed metal this is a treat...
