notes

Under The Waves is Pete Droge's fifth solo effort since 1994 and the follow-up to his critically acclaimed Puzzle Tree Records debut Skywatching.

Droge recorded Under The Waves’ 11 original songs at his remote recording facility Puzzle Tree Studio on an island near Seattle along with vocalist, long time collaborator and co-writer/producer Elaine Summers and cellist Eyvind Kang. With the exception of the cello, Droge plays every instrument on the album including acoustic and electric guitars, drums, bass, accordion, piano, Hammond organ, tambourine and glockenspiel among others. The album’s rich production is evident in such songs as “Under The Waves,” and “Give It All Away” while its elegant simplicity is expressed in “Going Whichever Way The Wind Blows.”

Pete Droge is one third of the critically acclaimed band The Thorns with Matthew Sweet and Shawn Mullins. He co-wrote the opening track, “Blue As You” and the single, “Beautiful Wreck” from Mullins’ newly released 9th Ward Pickin’ Parlor. Additionally, Droge co-wrote and recorded the title track to the well-received Beautiful Girls and composed scores for movies such as the award winning Tattoo, A Love Story. Furthermore, he’s produced several albums including Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard’s 2001 solo debut Bayleaf in which Droge and Gossard established a lasting collaborative relationship.

Of Droge’s new record Gossard says, “In Under the Waves Pete Droge has transcended his previous work. The wisdom of the songs, words and rhythm feels timeless and at the same time fresh. In both production and arrangement this work feels more universal and urgent. You can sense an awakening to deeper levels of expression and unself-consciousness that feels wonderful. The collaboration of Pete Droge and his long time partner Elaine Summers has really produced something special.”

-BOSTON GLOBE

“Droge’s appeal remains rooted in the charm and intimacy of his own gentle style.”
-PEOPLE MAGAZINE

“A worthy successor to the likes of Tom Petty.”

    author: Wes C. Addle

I have been a Pete Droge fan since "Necktie Second". His music then and the recent music from Under the Waves continue serve me well. Under the Waves invoke deep thoughts but keeps me moving the same time. Perfect for a sunday drive.

  • Good album

Good album. Like many, I got hooked in with 'Going whichever the wind blows'. Unfortunately the truth is the song peaks with the delivery of "you were caught in your world...I was lost in mine." That's not meant to be a criticism necessarily. Sometimes a moment in a song simply overwhelms the rest of it. A more complete song (and maybe album?) is 'Lilly Wants a Mountain' from Skywatching which they were kind enough to send me because of shipping delays. I'm glad they did because I think together they're more convincing of his talents.

It's so ironic how the world of advertising which so often is the white noise of our aural lives every once and a while picks an absolute cherry from the amazingly diverse and complex fruit bowl that is the " music industry".I think of Feist (1234) brought to everyones attention by Apple and now it's Peter's turn thanks to Toyota... but like Feist Peter Droge has been around for a while and doing some amazing things before this recent " hit". I have had the pleasure of listening to his music with the Thorns and in solo form (Skywatching)The result of this is I know I'll be anticipating every new release from this artist who shows the promise of a long, prolific and creative career."Under the Waves" while including the beautiful "Going Whichever Way the Wind Blows" (used to absolute perfection in the indie hit Tatoo a Love Story )has much much more depth than just the one song. I think the title song "Under the Waves" is both mellow and haunting. The expressions and sentiments of this song are so complete yet simple that it gives us almost a mantra to live by. "Butterfly" is another beautifully written song.. not only musically but lyrically too. It gives us a message that many will be able to relate to in a very personal way. It is this style in Peter's songs that I love the most. Droge says the things we too feel and lets us know we are not alone in these feelings. Well as you can see there is much more here than I can possibly tell you in this brief review ..so do yourself a favor include this music in your life you will be glad you did.

AWESOME! I really bought it because I looooved the song in the car commercial. But, I love the entire record as much as that one song (#10). I am so glad I bought it. And, I love doing business with CD Baby! Thanks so much. Julie Reagan

  • "Who is that?"
    author: mike buzan

As with many others, I heard a certain car commercial, and said "Who is that? Wow! That song is awesome." As soon as I found out who it was and ordered the CD, its not so much about that song as it is the whole album...I cant play just the one song. I have to play the whole album! It's just that good!

  • I bought Pete Droge's "Under the Waves"

And I LOVE it! I really like his voice and style, timeless and gentle. Melodies and lyrics are are very moving. I highly recommmend it. Such talent, reminds me of a few of my old favorites, Jackson Browne, CSN, and James Taylor. Thank you Pete! Sherry

  • a new fan
    author: Steve Iles

the Toyota commericial caught my attention so much I had to find out more. I've not been disappointed. Being an "old fart" it raises an eye brow or two when I talk of this ablum. But, having been brought up on the likes of Judy Collins, Joan Baez, and so many other folk groups of the early 60s, I can honestly say that Peter would hold his own. Between the incredible instrumentals as well as the melding of the harmonies, I harken back to early CSN and the like. Thank you.

The Coffee House channel on my Sirius Sattelite radio played "goin which way wind blows" and I had chills down my back and tears in my eyes. Was so nice to hear an artist reminiscent of those who played at L.A's Troubador Club many years ago. His music and lyrics are a talent not often displayed any longer in a world of more dancing and lights than any kind of melody or meaning. Thanks Pete.

  • Great CD.

I love the newest CD from Pete Droge, Under the Waves. I currently have it on repeat in my car. It was work to hunt down, since it didn't have the wide release of Pete Droge's earlier projects, but well worth the hunt!

  • Under the Waves

I've got all Droge's CD's. Under The Waves is the best one since Necktie Second, without a doubt.

  • GREAT NEW ALBUM !
    author: Werner Kühn-Koditek

As a hard dieing Byrdsfan it is clear that I love the musik of Pete Droge! I like all these new songs (less-into the sunset) Sadly a very short album! Also great records are skywatching and necktie second. Until today necktie second is my favorit, especialy the songs "straylin street, dog on chain & hamton room 306! Also Elaine Summers vocal is great. The cd's find a door and spacy and shakin are not realy bad,but for me it seems, the record company's tryin to push pete in a party direction! I'm wrong? Hope to see Pete live in europe! Excuse my english, never learnd it realy! Werner

  • Love It
    author: Janet

I've loved Pete Droge since I saw him live when he opened for Tom Petty. Elaine Summers adds her special touch to make this CD Pete's best yet!

  • The usual great Droge vocals an melodies
    author: Simon |Clements

Another fine CD from Mr Droge. I love the way he tracks his vocals and under the waves has some loverly guitar playing. I do slightly wish he would remember some of his earlier rockier roots but Under the waves is still agreat album and after a few more listens, I'm sure it will rank alongside some of his earlier work.

  • Pete Droge breaks new ground

  • Great new music from Pete!
    author: Michael

Pete Droge has always been one of my favorites, and I like this CD for it's depth, and meaningful lyrics, but also the smooth rolling melodies that seem to connect perfectly. Pete always delivers, especially with Under the Waves! I highly recommend.

  • My new favorite
    author: Carol

This CD has become my favorite to listen to. The songs are mellow and the lyrics really bring you to where the artist meant to take you. It leaves you wanting more.

  • Great CD!
    author: Cally

I love this CD. My intro to PD was through Sirius radio's Coffehouse. I heard "Going Whichever Way the Wind Blows" and bee-lined to the computer, which led to Pete's innovative website. I get the comparison to Tom Petty, but Pete's styling, at least in "Waves," is softer and more thoughtful than anything Petty has out there. Music can delight the ear, engage the mind, touch the heart, penetrate the soul; "Waves" does all for me, and then some. "Going Whichever Way the Wind Blows" yanks my heart strings every time I hear it. *sniffle*. Great CD!

  • Amazing
    author: Daniel

Another Great CD To Add To The Pete Droge Collection, Vocals And Harmonies Are Just Brilliant, Great Song Melodies And Musicianship. One Of The Best Albums This Year, Makes A Great Companion To Tom Petty's "Highway Companion". In One Word Wow.

  • Under the Waves (and Radar) added to Personal Must-Play List
    author: Pierce

Longtime PD fan anxiously anticipated this release and it was well worth the wait. An overall strong collection of material, exposing Pete's more ethereal or softer side. Not much to ROCK OUT to, but plenty of groove and hidden nuances in each song.

  • It doesn't rain in Seattle 360 days a year and it's suppose to be a secret.
    author: Lester Padriga

Pete has always been one of Seattle's secret also, He's the link between the 70's singer-sopngwriters, the likes of James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Old Neil and the current new crop. Electric or Accoustic, solo or with his band, he's great. His new record would be a warm welcome.

  • Great album from one of Seattle's best singer/songwriters.
    author: LeAnn Mercer

Some of Pete's best live shows have been solo or near solo acoustic sets; as much as he's more than capable of rocking out, it's the introspective and longing sound of his more acoustic work that showcases his music best. After hearing the title track on Pete's My Space page, I was giddy with anticipation for the full project, and have been listening in heavy rotation ever since my CD arrived. Under The Waves, by both individual track and complete release, represents some of Pete's best songwriting, musicianship and arrangements. This album is true to Pete as an artist yet explores new avenues not previously traveled on earlier recordings. Kudos to him for taking the time and conviction to release an album of songs that capture an honest and fresh presentation of his talents.

  • Definitely worth the wait.
    author: Kelley

Every song great on this one!! Personal favorites are "Give It All Away", "Under The Waves" & the redone "Electric Green."
