Album Notes

MUSIC BY GAMERS FOR GAMERS

Dronolan's Tower produces medieval fantasy mood music appropriate for use in conjunction with pencil and paper Role-Playing Games (RPGs) such as Dungeons and Dragons or Collectible Card Games (CCGs) such as Magic: The Gathering.

Dronolan's Tower's debut album, "Legends of Kitholan" was released April 25th, 2007 and is now available for sale worldwide. "Legends of Kitholan" features over 64 minutes of music recorded by a professional Hollywood studio orchestra and choir, composed by David Allen Young, an experienced composer and gamemaster of 15 years.

The music covers a diverse range of subject matter, providing both inspirational themes as well as suitable background music for various game settings. Every aspect of a typical gaming session was accounted for. The CD features music that can be used for travel, combat, dungeon exploration, story-telling, introducing or highlighting heroes, villains, cities, and monsters, as well as marching to war or resting at camp (while calculating experience points).

"The idea for this project came about as a result of my own efforts to include music in my games as an AD&D 2nd Edition Dungeon Master. At first I was using soundtracks from various fantasy-themed films, but my gaming group quickly got tired of hearing the same background music over and over again. I decided to use my talents as a classically-trained film music composer to write a few pieces of music to cover some other areas of our gaming experience that weren't represented well in the soundtrack CDs, as well as to create some more music we could use for combat and exploration. It was during this time that it occurred to me that it would be really handy for gamemasters to have a continuous supply of original music for their games, specifically tailored to enhance various aspects of a typical gaming session. That's when I decided to create Dronolan's Tower and start writing the music for what would later turn out to be the 'Legends of Kitholan' CD.

Once I had written most of the music and began programming the computer to play back simulated orchestral and choral sounds via MIDI, I quickly realized that in order to do this music justice, I had to record it with living, breathing musicians. I wanted it to sound every bit as good as those soundtrack albums from the best fantasy adventure movies. These days you can get a pretty good sound out of the computer, but it still doesn't have quite the same magic as a real orchestra and choir. So, I decided to hire a professional Hollywood studio orchestra and choir to record the music. It was a joy to work with these wonderful musicians. I'm very glad I took that route, and I believe the gamemasters who get their hands on this album will really appreciate it."

- David Allen Young on the making of "Legends of Kitholan."

Two words… “Awe… some!”
author: Marc Shayed, GamingReport.com
From the depths of the darkest cavern, to the shadows of the deepest forests, to the blood drenched and body littered fields of battle, “Legends of Kitholan” provides a musical background to inspire players and game masters alike... Music, if chosen carefully can help enhance any gaming experience and help your players feel the tension, to feel frightened, to get excited. David Allen Young has successfully made music that is very well suited for gaming. The music takes the listeners on a great fantasy adventure - from great battles, horrible encounters, desolate ruins, and the welcoming hearth of a warm tavern where stories of great deeds are being told by candlelight... One of the pit-falls of many that produce this type of music is the over use of synthesizers and a ‘tinny” sound to the music. Fortunately, this CD does not suffer from that in any way... This is a great CD, to just sit back and listen to, to read a book to, or to play while running my players through my favorite adventures. The composer David Allen Young knows his craft, his target audience, and the subject. I can’t wait to see future release from him! I am happy to give this CD a high recommendation.

Think John Williams meets Basil Poledouris with a bit of Vangelis
author: Heather Barnhorst, Game Trade Magazine
Dronolan's Tower is billed as "Music By Gamers for Gamers" which does a great disservice to this high-fantasy, even epic, score. This CD is not some fannish effort that simply passes muster, but a full-fledged musical delight. For those of you who enjoy movie soundtracks (and I am one of you), think John Williams meets Basil Poledouris with a bit of Vangelis sprinkled in to leaven the entire work. But don't make the mistake of thinking that this work is derivative - it does have its own unique flavor. I was amazed at how well this soundtrack evoked a world and the journey through its landscape. As I listened, I felt as if I were following a fully-delineated story filled with monsters, heroes and worthy adversaries. The titles are equally evocative - Balisaar's Great Beast, Voyage of the Defiant, and The Redemption of Lord Michael. In fact, don't wait for a gaming session as an excuse to pick up this soundtrack. You should enjoy it on its merits alone and find that repeated playings are in order. Perhaps the best part of this soundtrack is the promise implied by the words "Vol. 1". Surely there will be a Volume 2 and perhaps a Volume 3. I'm hooked and look forward to hearing the continuation of the story with quite a bit of anticipation. You should be, too.

A very good and ambitious project which I cannot other than applaud!

...medieval fantasy mood music with more hints of darkness than light. If you like bands like Erdenstern you will probably drool while listening to Dronolan’s Tower. When I saw the artwork I thought of Midnight Syndicate but oh so wrong I was. This is far beyond what Midnight Syndicate could even dream of! It’s actually in the same league as the more experienced top dogs in this genre. "The Battle of Shadow Pass" is without a doubt the best track on the CD and I love it. I have almost nothing bad to say about this great release. I though would like to hear something a bit more unique from time to time. David list (on his myspace site) John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Danny Elfman, Hans Zimmer, Basil Poledouris (and others) as influences and you can hear that in the music. Some might say too much. To be honest this is a very good and ambitious project which I cannot other than applaud!

Very impressive debut from a creative new talent.
author: Dark Realms Magazine
Legends of Kitholan offers original instrumental accompaniment to bring your medieval fantasies to life. Advertised as "music by gamers, for gamers," the album was specifically designed as a soundtrack to enrich fantasy roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons, offering 16 tracks that are tailor-made to accent various adventure scenarios. Composer and musician David Allen Young produces some wonderfully inspirational pieces. Tracks like "The Traveller's Song" and "Lady Elowyn" deliver a lighter fare with delicate harps and romantic strings, but the real standout cuts are the dramatic pieces like "Charge of the Valiant" and the epic "The Battle of Shadow Pass," which are sure to inspire gamers with powerful orchestrations, pounding drums and chanting choirs. This is a very impressive debut from a creative new talent. Recommended.
