DR. SURF is a band dedicated to making the sounds that made California world famous- by playing SURF MUSIC! DR. SURF has their own modern brand of high energy Surf Rock that began in the early 60's. We are from California and we ALL SURF HARD. Playing locally in the Santa Barbara/ Ventura area, it's SURF by day and JAM by night! However, Dr. Surf is planning a world tour to go to Japan, Hawaii and Australia.
On their debut album "Who is DR. SURF?", DR. SURF throws into the mix Classic old style Surf, Secret Agent/Spy sounds, scary zombie thriller tracks and even French and Mexican flavors to create their own recipe for KILLER SOUNDS! The timeless Fender Stratocaster guitar sound is what makes this album pop, taking original sounds and bringing them to the NOW.
Currently playing with DR. SURF are:
RORY ANTON, a.k.a. "Dr. Surf"-GUITAR
Rory has been playing guitar for over 20 years. A serious disciple of the instrument, Rory has studied many styles, amazing audiences with his versatility. He first got the surf bug at 4 years old, strumming his ukulele in New Zealand and learning to surf on the North Island. After moving to California, he picked up the guitar and graduated from Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT)in Hollywood at 19. Rory has been playing professionally ever since, making his living from 6 strings. He has written music and played with many diverse musicians and bands such as:
Acoustic rock singer/songwriter
TED LENNON (Jack Johnson's friend and soulful influence- http://tedlennon.com/)
Master Percussionist and film composer
TONY HUMECKE (http://tonyhumecke.com/)
Rock singer/songwriter extraordinaire
Crazy Frank Zappa like experimental rock band
Rory is also a record producer and DR. SURF evolved from sessions with the band Mr. Ectomy. While producing their 3rd album “ECTO 420” at Red Zone Studios in Burbank, California, Rory asked the boys to play on his DR. SURF project. Great musicianship and feel, along with plenty of humor were put into the mix and DR. SURF was born. Understanding the importance of the guitar and how it speaks, Rory wrote mostly instrumentals to convey true melodies. Since then Rory’s brain-child DR. SURF has grown up, performing in different countries and spreading its unique brand of SURF ROCK around the world.
NATHAN McEUEN, a.k.a. “Dr. Peter Portobello”- DRUMS
Nathan truly has show business and music in his blood. He has been performing with his dad (John McEuen, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) since he was a young boy. Nathan has studied many different instruments, guitar, piano, bass and drums and puts his own musicality into each one. Nathan is an excellent vocalist as well, covering versatile styles ranging from Elvis to Prince. He moved to California three years ago from Utah to pursue his musical career. Rory and Nathan hit it off when they met and have been playing music together ever since. DR. SURF truly rocks hard when Nathan gets behind the skins-he truly digs SURF ROCK. Nathan is an amazing songwriter as well, and has just released his debut CD “Grand Design.” (http://cdbaby.com/cd/nathanmceuen). Check it out!
ARON VanALSTINE, a.k.a. "Karate Kid" - BASS
Originally from Minnesota, Aron came out to Cali to perform and write music. He was classically trained on the piano, then made the switch to bass and guitar. Aron also plays the requinto (a small 8 stringed guitar), an instrument he learned to play while living in Bolivia. Aron has made the switch to the west coast fully, as he is an avid surfer now, surfing locally and in Baja Mexico as well. This insires his writing and playing bass in DR. SURF.
DAVID GOROSPE, a.k.a. "Kawika" - KEYBOARDS
"Island Style" is the way to describe David's laid back and beautiful approach to music. A classically trained pianist and vocalist, David has deep understanding of Bach and Mahler. However, his island (Hawaii and the Philippines) roots take over when playing with DR. SURF. David has played with many Reggae and Jam bands over the years, developing an unstoppable and funky groove on the keys. These bands include Rising Son and Euphoria.
Now David is rockin' the keys and the waves in DR. SURF.
