What more can I say? Whenever I am describing this band, I always tell people the the Crooks are what Social Distortion should have been. Gritty, heartfelt Rock -n- Roll, with a little bit of country thrown in to boot. Every bit as good as thir first album. If you are a fan of Rock -n- Roll, Rockabilly, or Americana, get this album now! What more can I say? If Social Distortion grew up around Hazard County rather than Orange County, they might sound like the Dry County Crooks.
Throughout there is plenty of punk snarl, dark themed stories, rockabilly attitude as well as searing solos like on Family, Faith and Love combined with punchy acoustic rhythms.
The Crooks play with feeling and sing as earnestly about riding the rails, getting drunk and murder and going to jail or the grave for your love as they do about family, faith and love.
Kimberly, an old fashioned cheating and killing ballad is my favourite track and the reason I bought the CD, though Kimberly actually isn’t mentioned in the song.
This aint your grandpappy’s country, but it certainly reflects that era’s seedy underbelly. It is an excellent listen.
